I have a home alarm system. However, don't want to pay the monitoring fee.

Is it possible to have it work locally instead?

Also, I'm in a rental and don't know the codes. Is there a way to reset that or am I out of luck?

Thanks.

I have a friend who set his up to page him when intrusion, fire, etc. is detected. And, he can call the system on the telephone and find out the cause of the alarm or just check the system's status. Other than that, it works exactly like a monitored system.

Just like Jack said.
Also you can have it trigger a local alarm (siren); this will usually scare off an intruder. You can have 130+ db. and multiple sirens.

If you give me the model number and manufacturer I might be able to help you with the code.

All systems have the ability to trigger a switchable device when the alarm is tripped. You can buy a voice dialer from radioshack or other sources that could call you on a cell phone (or any other numbers you want, usually thay can call three numbers). You could also use just the siren.

You need the codes or to know an installer who can tell you how to clear the unit and then provide you with a manual and the base access code programmed at the factory(used when the system memory is cleared to allow the installer to program the pass codes and other features of the system, the base code can be changed) Have you asked the person you are renting the property from?, that would be your best starting place.
