OK, so I've been to the BLM Web site and, in true gubmint form, they're not particularly specific about where you can shoot in the California desert. ("You can shoot pretty much anywhere, except...[litany follows].") Okay, they do give a map for the shotgun-only area near 29 Palms.
Aaaaanyway, I'm tired of stationary shooting at the indoor range and the controlled outdoor range at San Gabriel is no better, so some buddies and I want to go out to the desert and do some more realistic practical application. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to offer some tips on where some good areas are, not *too* far from LA (say within 1.5 hours, ideally). We'd like to go out early on a Sunday in the very near future, set up a canopy and some targets, and blaze the day away without having to worry about hitting (or being hit by) stray off-roaders. Two-wheel-drive pickup-accessible only, please.
Can it be as simple as taking the 40 past Barstow, then making a left somewhere and driving into the hills? Such freedom seems so...alien.
You can e-mail me directly so as to not advertise your super-secret shooting spot to the world: cegropp@yahoo.com. Thanks a mil!
