So this year I am heading to the Outerbanks, NC for vacation. More Specifically Cape Hatteras. I have my Florida CCW which allows me to legally carry in North Carolina. However I know that Cape Hatteras is a protected Wildlife Area. I would like to know if there are any restrictions to keep me from carrying in this area? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

One of my favorite places in the world for the past 40 years.

The problem with handguns is that so much of the Outer Banks south of Oregon Inlet all the way to the village of Ocracoke is a National Seashore controlled/administered by the National Park Service. In other words, it's a National Park.

there's Bubba's BBQ not far from the Hatteras lighthouse. ... and the Weeping Radish Bavarian Brew Pub just over the sound in Manteo, where the Black Radish Lager is served in liter mugs ... as it should be! :-) A couple or three of those and the world becomes a mighty happy place! (Just let the wife drive. ... You'll have to ask her to find the car anyway ... maybe to find the parking lot!)

Unfortunately, NC has some of the most restrictive and odd carry laws anywhere. Make sure you check up on them before you go.

Also, as John mentioned, you're in and out of National Seashore property all along the Outer Banks. For the moment, that's all off-limits again, so watch your step.

Hatteras has always been a favorite stop of ours on our way down to paradise. (That would be Ocracoke Island.)

Yea I was reading up on the restrictions. Some of them seem a little rediculous. For example no carry in a financial institute. I feel like this is one of the places where I feel the most vulnerbale. But I don't live in this state, I will just be on vacation. Yea hopefully we will be able to legally carry in national parks soon. Looks like my carry weapon is gonna stay in my lock box in my truck for most of the trip.

Yaaaay HOWARDS!!! :-) Conch fritters, droooooool! And probably 90% of all the beers I've ever HEARD of. Our real favorite eating spot on the island is actually The Back Porch restaurant, but we have about a 1/2 dozen other favorites. It's great that the island is so quiet. We eat so much we have to sleep most of the time we're there! ;)

• Assemblies and establishments where admission was charged. §14-269.3
• Assemblies and establishments where alcohol is both sold and consumed. §14-269.3
• State Capitol Building, the Executive Mansion, the Western Residence of the Governor, or on the grounds of any of these buildings, and any building housing any court of the General Court of Justice.§14-269.4
• State office buildings or any portion of a building in which there are State offices. §14-415.11(c)
• Law Enforcement or Correctional Facilities. §14-415.11(c)

I'm sure the good citizens are working to straighten this mess out, but that's the state of things for the time being.

Hope they get it rectified before I retire to OINC. Of course, at the rate things are going, they have a LOT of time...

Yeah,NC is murder on the nerves for CC.I spend 3 weeks every year in Blowing Rock and Murphy.
Murphy's downtown is really a disaster.Signs on the sporting goods store,gift shop,the unemployment office,a furniture store,course all the banks are OL(only Montana shares this "distinction",TMK.)Restaurants that serve alcohol are verboten.
Amazingly ,the Public Library welcomes gun owners so I can post on THR!No sign.So mainly you just wander the streets unable to walk in almost anyplace.Oh,the ice cream shop on the main corner is cool,nice lady owner,likes guns.Watch out for those funeral processions and parades.They can get you.
The Outer Banks present added problems as has been stated because of the National Seashore factor.
For a Southern state its a wreck gun wise.I do love it though and the people are so friendly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is no longer there. They have moved to Jarvisburg and have 24 acres of farmland. They're pushing more sustainable and organic foods along with their beer and crafts. I heard the Bavarian decor was not kept. A real bummer. A visit to the Weeping Radish and the Christmas Shop right next door was a yearly family event. Mama Kwan's is a new favoriteof mine.

I plan to be there in 2 weeks. I'll likely carry. We typically plan on a day down at Hatteras/Rodanthe/Avon/Waves/Salvo. I'll leave the sidearm home that day but carry the rest of the time....well except on the beach.

We have some odd carry laws. Changes are being attempted, but the state legislature refuses to pass them.

Please keep us apprised of the (hopefully) changing carry laws. It sucks to have to weigh how much your rights/safety are worth when considering a trip to such a cool place.

Facts have already been posted in this thread. The one catch is educational facilities is a broad term that includes many areas other than schools. For example almost every hospital is a "teaching hospital", etc. Most businesses allow conceal carry and most LE is gun friendly. There are vague/gray areas. Financial institituions are a no-no, if you are carrying to a ATM on Bank property outside of business hours there is generally not an issue.

Can you not open carry at a bank in NC? It seems, from my reading, that it is CONCEALED carry that is prohibited at a bank. I guess if you wanted to strap it on a belt holster you'd be legal....just wondering how open carry the state is..and if you'd be asked to leave? Do the signs apply to just conceal carry or conceal AND open?

LEGALLY in NC you can OC in a bank even though you can not CC, but I wouldn't do it unless I was prepared to be harassed, especially if you are in a major city. (I'm not saying I think it should be this way, I'm saying this is the way it is).

And I've run into the same issue vacationing at OBX, so much of the area is national park, so no CC allowed. I never even looked into the National Seashore laws, the NPS laws were already a show stopper.

Very, very, VERY unfortunately, the National Parks policy change (which is not in effect right now anyway) that allowed carry in NPS areas, only allowed folks to carry in National Parks within a state to the extent that they were allowed to in State Parks within that state, if I understand correctly.

NC does not allow carry in State Parks so it's a double no-go.

We rent a house there for a week in August each summer. Pig Man's and High Cotton BBQ are my favorite BBQ joints. Pigman's sold to new owners a couple years back, but still pretty good. Also RV's/Sugar Creek is good for fried seafood. That and redfish caught off the dock behind the house make for good eating.

Keeping it gun related, I bring a Glock 19 for the house and car. I don't carry, but keep it accessible. It goes in tupperware in the cooler for beach duty.

I vacation in the Outer Banks every year. This July will mark the 15th year. We usually go to Duck, but this year we'll be at Corolla Light.
Tell you what, on the way down and on the way back I do indeed keep a pistola handy. While I'm there? Not so much. In 14 previous trips, I've never had an encounter that was even remotely threatening. The great majority of the people there are vacationers, just like me. The ones who aren't, are college kids and locals working in the many restaurants and shops trying to earn an honest buck.
I'm going to predict that what crime there is during the vacation season runs more towards stuff being stolen from houses and cars while the owners are enjoying the beach. For that reason, while I am there I take pains to make sure my pistol is well concealed in the house.
Get you some good beer and barbecue while you are there. Enjoy the sun and water. Don't obsess over the gun.

yeah our gun laws are a bit of a mess, alot of them stem from the old racist ways of the south that were never corected (purchasing permits- they were done to keep blacks from getting guns, there is a bill to get rid of this now. we also have no castle doctrine-there is also a bill to add this)

nc has a ton of state both state and national parks and thats part of what makes it great!

our carry laws arent too bad but yeah they are a pain the part about parades is crap there are alot of little things that suck but all in all its great here

that new marlin record is a beast it was caught on paul spencers boat (owner of spencer yachts) my buddy wired it so that was a huge boost to his carrer...till he got laid off

do yourself a few favors go fishing, go to howards on ocracoke, and eat some carolina BBQ if you make it to the main land go into new bern and go to Moores BBQ amazing

if you dont make it to the mainland but you are around nags head go to pigmans! its great

keep in mind that now you need a saltwater license for fishing its called a crfl (coastal recreational fishing license)

Yes,Sam.At beaches that do not fall under the National Seashore(or State Park) boundaries on the Outer Banks, carry is permissible.
But be very careful.It's a very complicated jurisdiction. NPS and State jurisdiction constantly intersect..Have a very good detailed map.
But as said,if Coburn wins,I burn my maps and forgetaboutit!:cool:
