guess i should have pasted this question here instead...
Hello,
I am new to the forums. I purchased an M1 Garand about a month ago and I went out shooting with it the other day and it would not chamber a new round after each shot (had to pull back on the bolt each time to get a round chambered). I cleaned and lubed the weapon before I went out; not sure what is casuing this, except maybe a bent operating rod? Not sure. What would be wrong with my M1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Will

So is it ejecting ? Or just not chambering ?

Possibly a weak op rod spring or old ammo.

the spent rounds are ejecting. just not chambering the unspent rounds.

Sounds like short-cycling. Bent op rod, gas plug not tight, gas piston too loose a fit, light ammo (Garand likes full-power loads). Wrong bullet weight, sticky chamber. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Best option is to check around for a Garand nut (collector) locally. See if he may have the timing gauge or even look it over for you.

If it ejects correctly it probably not the gas cylinder or OP rod. Change the OP rod spring first. It's the cheapest part. Local gun shows should have them plus they're all over the net too. 8-10 bucks I think.
