Dumb double barrel question

I just came by a double barreled shotgun...my first after a couple of pump guns.

Is there any reason that you couldn't put a laser bore sight in the left barrel and shoot a slug out of the right?

I'm just wondering if there is any downside of this before I: 1) buy a bore sight and 2) go and try it.

Thats funny. Its also a neat idea. You might bang your boresighter on the table a few times to see if it will hold up to the recoil.

One downside might be if you put the shell in the same side as the boresighter. You won't do that but once though. I guess if you use a BS that goes in the chamber that won't be an issue.

The barrels are not parallel.

Ratshooter: I figured that the bore sight would need to be pretty shock proof and/or fit tight inside the bore.

TAB: I guess I don't understand your post. Not parallel?

Hoffy, TAB nailed it. The barrels on double guns are made to intersect each other at a certain range (like the wing mounted machine guns on WW2 fighter planes). At close range your bore sighter idea would probably work, but maybe not at longer ranges. If you're really serious about it, I suppose you could always just take it out to the range and pattern it to see just how far off it really is.

Once upon a time, I had a SxS Stevens (I think a Mdl 312?) That I decided to try with slugs. ( I read alot about the old African Hunters and that was as close as I could get to a double rifle:)) So, I paced off @100 steps and was hitting a little wide on a paper plate. I sandbagged her down, using sandbags and bags of #9 shot, and repeatedly got the slugs on the same horizontal plane @ 10" apart. I did a lot of head scratching until my father (who knows everything) comes by and says "dummbo, their crossing in flight:scrutiny:". Turns out the barrels were regulated to about 40 yards. Paced of @25 yards, and put two holes almost touching in the paper plate.

I concur wholeheartedly, the barrels are not parallel.

Thanks, all, for the information. I never knew that the barrels of a SxS were not parallel.

Thanks to you guys, I didn't have to wear a path from the firing line to the paper plate to figure it out!

Of course they're not parallel. That's precisely WHY this idea will work, if they're regulated properly. If they're regulated properly to a specific point of aim at a specific yardage, then yes you should be dead on at that range. If they're not regulated properly, such as parallel or worse, then it won't work as well. Actually, if they are truly parallel for some reason, the point of impact will be much much closer (only 1"-1.5" away), than if they are NOT parallel, yet NOT regulated properly, OR if shot at a much longer distance beyond the point of regulation.

No offense but why would you waste a whole barrel, they make external lasers for a reason.

Why tie up a barrel? Good question (note the first word in the thread title).

I can easily obtain a laser bore sight and have never used a laser sight before. I thought I would try this before I did a more permanent solution on this or my 870.

I think it is worth a try if you can find a cost effective sight. Having never used a laser bore sight i don't know how well they will be visible? Are they more powerful than normal laser sights? I'm a huge fan of lasers, but unless it is a green laser for day or used at night 40 yards out doors is a little far for then isn't it? (please note i have only ever used red handgun and infrared rifle lasers. )

I don't know if you'd be able to adjust the bore sight to zero it. I understand what a bore sight laser is just not how it is made. The bore of one might not correspond with the flight path of the other...

Why not duct tape or tiewrap the lazer between the barrels under the gun?

Frees 2nd barrel and it's in the middle ish.

On a seriuus note it might work but don't hold your breath.
