RCW 82.08.832
Exemptions -- Sales of gun safes.
(1) The tax levied by RCW 82.08.020 does not apply to sales of gun safes.
(2) As used in this section and RCW 82.12.832, "gun safe" means an enclosure specifically designed or modified for the purpose of storing a firearm and equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device which, when locked, prevents the unauthorized use of the firearm.

[1998 c 178 § 1.]

NOTES:

Effective date -- 1998 c 178: "This act takes effect July 1, 1998." [1998 c 178 § 3.]

That's an interesting law. I actually think it's a pretty good one to. It endorses the use of safes to properly lock up guns but violates no ones rights or safety like in states that have mandatory laws. The great thing is it saves you money and still leaves you with the choice of what to do with your guns. Figure on the $600 dollar safe I bought in AZ with a sales tax of around 8% it could have saved me $48 and that means more stuff to put in the safe.

Anyone know of an inexpensive, portable safe? And where to buy it in Western Washington? Us apartment dwellers who want to start gun collections are wary of those 500 pound monsters... and figure a small locking cabinet, or light security safe would be sufficient....

Sorry to threadjack, but the original topic is answered. :-)

I've been in your boat for some time. The very best I've seen in WA was one from a suggestion from someone else on this board. Google "remington express gun safe".

It's a 16 gun 16 cubic feet safe with a lockable storage space on the inside for pistols or jewelry. It has a lighted digital key pad as apposed to spin lock. And the lock is by LaGard. The lock was recommended by another safe dealer on the board. Weigh is right around 230ish. So it would be easily manueavered by 2 guys, or one smart guy with a dolley. It also can be secured to the wall and floor. All for $388 out the door!

BTW, forgot to include. In can be purchased at Sportco in Fife. They didn't currently have any in stock, so they would have to order them.

Sportco: 253-922-2222

Good luck!

Ah, I was hoping for something that disassembled and re-assembled... but that looks to be a good compromise.

Muchas Gracias!

Wow. That's a pretty good idea. It should be the same everywhere.

Sam's Club in Shoreline has one of the smaller Winchester Gun Safes for sale. IIRC the price is $666. I believe they can arrange delivery too.
I can check on that for you Thursday if you'd like.

And yes there is no tax if used for storing guns. However if you buy the same safe for storing jewelry and papers and such there is tax.

I think two guys with a heavy duty appliance dolly could get it into an apartment.

Also GunTown in 99 in Edmonds has two small safes, one is a 12 gun model and the other is an 8 that you ought to be able to get into a pickup truck or van easily. You'd have to bolt these to the wall so they wouldn't tip over. I don't recall the brand but they were only about $200 or so.

I have to go right by there tomorrow (Wednesday) if you'd like me to look and get more info.

Anyone have an opinion on the ones they sell at Wally World? I know they aren't the same quality as the more expensive ones, but how much lower quality? What should one look for in a gun safe?

Well, it's a start, but it's an infringement that guns and ammunition are taxed at all. They should be exempt from all taxation, not only to avoid infringing on the right to keep and bear arms, but to encourage civilian marksmanship. Tax luxuries like alcohol and tobacco, not necessities like food and arms.

Looks like it's been awhile since anyone posted here but if you're still interested in a small gun safe go to :

or ShotLock.com

Thanks!
