State media said Yang's capsule was supplied with a gun, a knife and tent in case he landed in the wrong place.

OK, what kind of gun do you think the Chinese equip their astronauts with?

Hmmm. What kind of pistol do the Chinese use? Makarov? Tokarev? Probably something like that, whatever their sidearm is.

I'd assume a Mak-copy.

Me too, as I've seen a picture of a Chinese military police type with a Makarov.

However, Norinco is the largest manufacturer of small arms in the world. In addition to military arms, they make copies of popular commercial arms and sell them commerically where legal and on the black market where not.

Wonder what sidearm the chinese military actually uses, I mean the front line units?

'Course, I also wonder what light machine guns they use. Hard to find info on their military hardware on the 'net.

They have some sort of 5.8mm armor piercing pistol with a Hi-Power action and polymer lower. A lot of good that'll do against apes on horseback.

I'd be thinking shotgun, as the Russkies gave their cosmonauts one to fend of bears and tigers, should they come down in Siberia.

Dr.Rob
October 15, 2003, 11:40 PM
No the russkies had a three barrel pistol/short arm combo. It fired a flare, a large rifle bullet and a shotgun shell.

I'd imagine the sinonaut will be packing a type 59 pistol. (makarov)

Which gun for the Chinese Space Hero?

I don't know. Is he wearing kevlar? Do you think he may land here in Tennessee? :uhoh:

Oh, wait, that wasn't what you were asking, was it? :o

Nahhhh. Any country wants its astronauts to have the best available. Norinco 1911 clone.

Or if the guy is a sportscar/collector/celebrity type, maybe the Norinco Broomhandle Mauser copy.

Since they just now completed something the US and USSR did 42 years ago the Astronaut probably had a slingshot or a Red Ryder to go along with their dehydrated rice and antiquated "space capsule"

Whats next? Are the Chinese going to invent the sitcom and TV dinners?

Probably one of those fake cigarette lighter guns....:p

You think they'd trust him with a real gun??

"This is another view of the gun provided to some of the early cosmonauts for survival purposes. It is being held by our tour guide. The gun is basically a sawed-off shotgun with two side-by-side barrels on top and a smaller-gauge barrel under it. The Russians wanted the gun to be powerful enough to kill a bear. The rifle stock is a sort of trapezoidal machete that can be detached from the gun."

Dr. Rob, you're only partly right.

The gun is pretty much a sawed-off drilling. No mention of a flare capability, as the cosmonauts were issued self-contained parachute flares.

What's the deal with the Chinese "bashing" here?

I'm happy for the people of China.
I'm not happy for the commie-pinko government that has a strangle hold on it's people though.

Maybe the gun is for the Space Hero in case he gets stuck up there. "Our comrade has died a hero to the people of the revolution...pow." My bruthas from another muthas need to put their science tech into solving SARS instead of launching meat puppets in tin cans.

You're all assuming it's a sidearm. Maybe they went all out and gave him one of those spiffy 5.8 X 42 Type 95 rifles. To quote Small Arms Review:

"The standard rifle in China's new weapons complex is the Type 95 bullpup. With an overall length of only 29.3 inches and weighing only 7.16 lbs it is both short and handy." :)

In that case, cancel the barf-sign and please accept my apologies for briefly thinking you were racist. :(

Sorry, I should have read all of the posts on this thread more carefully. It has been a misunderstanding.

Slightly off-topic, but if they start sending several rockets a day into space, would it then become a Chinese Launch Buffet?

Sergeant: "Comlad Yang, come heeah, all this fah you."
Cosmonaut: "What all this?"
Sergeant: "SUPPLIES!!!"

Some of us actually 'Chinaman' to be offensive and archaic

... when 'Chinaperson' is a much more acceptable alternative :D

Is the 5.8mm unique to the T97 or whatever that thing is?

The Chinese have been launching satellites for years. This is the first time, though, that they've had a guy in there.

In reality, this is probably little more than a publicity stunt. I mean, other than some scientific research, there isn't much reason to send people into space right now, espeically if you're going to send a guy up, have him orbit the earth like twice then come back down.

Skunk -- AFAIK the 5.8 X 42 is unique to the new rifle system (there are other variants of the 95 including a SAW-type rifle). It's actually pretty analagous the the AUG in that you can slap on different bbls to fill different roles. I know Norinco *does* export them (where I do not know, It's certainly not here, and even if they were 922r compliant, Norinco got hit with an embargo here for copying Sigs or something), but the export version is chambered in .223 Rem.

Oddly enough a friend of mine loaned me 'Splinter Cell' a few months ago and I remember being blown away that they got the rifles right...

Sending big rockets into space is about the same whether you're sending people or warheads.
Aside from the feel-good, patriotic aspect of it, the launch supposed to tell American intelligence that China is comfortable launching a rocket big enough to deliver XXX-ton bombs to a target XXX kilometers away.

No way dude; I own e'm both. The Tok is a waaaay superior desighn than they CZ52. Essentaily a modified browning, with a removable hammer/sear group. Quite accurate and very reliable. The CZ52= prone to break, lot's of small parts, overly complicated hk like roller system, and not particularly accurate. You ever field strip a CZ52? It's a farkin nightmare. The CZ is neat, but it aint the worlds greatist combat pistol. I'll take a norinco any day.;)
