Hey guys- I'm sure most of you are aware of house bill 45, but I found a website that summarizes bills. I was checking to see what they said about this bill, and they also had a petition that will be sent to congress with signatures on it. They are only at 3100 signatures so far, so they need our help! Here are the websites- first it the summary, second is the petition page.

Internet petitions usually don't work. You should make sure to call and write all your representatives often.

They said that they were going to hand deliver this to members of the house, so I hope it will go a little better... Anything should help grab their attention. I agree with writing them as well though.

Just don't let an internet petition replace actually contacting your representative directly. Such petitions are generally "feel good" excercise that don't avail much. I don't suppose that they do any harm though.

I signed. It probably won't help, but it can't hurt.

I'll write to my representatives, too.

They've been getting a lot of mail, lately.

Well HB45 in particular is not out of committee, and probably won't leave the committee so at the moment it's not a big problem.

This particular thing has been introduced several times over the last few years by the same guy.

This one is dead, the thing to do now is watch out for the next one.

There will be some of them shortly, including an "assault weapon ban" promised to be introduced by McCarthy in the next couple of weeks.

On this Forum, members often refer to it as HR-45 or HR45.
You can learn a lot more about it by doing a search on the Legal section of this Forum.
HR-45 is widely considered to be a dead issue. Take a look at those other threads for more info.a look at those other threads for more info.

Deltaboy, did they have details about the 'being back' part, or could they just be trying to use that as a tactic to raise funds?

I'm a Member, but I hate groups I belong to using fear tactics to raise funds.

i get the 'firemans union' calling looking for money. I always ask, "Which one?", the reply is usually 'the firemans union'. I tell them who I work for, what I do, and that I don't appreciate them tryign to represent me in that manner.

So far, I have not heard from the NRA myself.

Nothing new, been sitting there dead in committee for months.
Likely to stay that way.

This one isn't worth worrying about this year.

Activism isn't a chat forum.

Just because this thing is dead doesn't mean the thread doesn't have to stay on focus.

The e-mails don't help as much as a well hand written letter to your congressman and/or senator. The letter must be short and to the point and a single page.. I have many replies to letters that were one to two paragraphs long but seldom receive replies to anything longer. I also attach a seperate reference page when more than one reference is used.

Keep sending the e-mails, but letters letters are more effective.

My son contacted me about HR45 this morning. I think it's a lot to do over little.

What about the New York congressman who kept re-introducing a bill to repeal the Second Amendment? That went nowhere. And with the Heller decision, I have heard nothing since about it.

Don B. Kates. Jr. "Restricting Handguns: the Liberal Skeptics Speak Out" North River Press, 1979, pointed out that polls of gun owners showed that liberal rhetoric on banning handguns has had the effect of insuring that any call to voluntarily register handguns nationwide would be met with massive civil disobedience: refusal to comply under justifiable fear that that the point of registration is to facilitate confiscation (the 1975 quotes from Nelson Shields, founder of Handgun Control Inc (now called the Brady Campaign) support that view: Shields outlined calling first for registration and licensing, then practically eliminating legal ownership except by police, security guards, and heavily regulated shooting clubs.)

HR45 is doomed to failure before it can be started out of committee. But it don't hurt to aware of the threat, just dont go overboard.

No co-sponsors.

This bill seems to re-surface as a "hot topic" every few months.

Its apparent effect is to distract people in the gun-owning community from other activities of this administration and its supporters in the legislature.

The NRA and other organizations have an eye on this bill. If it ever actually shows signs of life, the alarms will be immediate.

There's enough other stuff to be done, and enough other issues to address, that barking at our CongressCritters about HB 45 serves only to waste our time, effort, and resources, as well as hurting our credibility -- "crying wolf" if you will.

It's understandable that people get riled at this kind of thing, but let's keep our primary attention on the live ones.

For now, this one's a dud.

Great response ArfinGreebly. May I use it verbatim in response to the e-mails I get concerning HB-45?

Sure.

Also refer them to sites that document this.

My response to my son about this after he got a "pass on to friend alert" on HR45

Son--

HR45 has been in committee for months. It has no co-sponsors.
Nobody but the guy who introduced it has backed it (so far).
If it gets backers and appears to move, National Rifle Assn,
Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of America
and Jews For the Presevation of Firearms Ownership will raise
an alarm. Til then it serves a a reminder of what some of the
enemies of gun ownership are thinking of, and is a case to be
vigilant. But if we overreact to a dead bill, it can work against us.

With respect, this is not a discussion forum. The purpose of Activism is for sharing concrete plan.
