My local gun dealer has a Smith 53 on consignment. I have to say Im pretty interested in the .22 jet caliber. I understand that it can be plagued with problems, not the least of which is the odd .222 diameter bullets. Has anyone found a way around this? Any way to cram a .224 diameter bullets ment for more common .22 centerfires through a .222 diameter bullet resizer.
How overpriced is $650 for a 53 in 80% condition w/ no box or accessories.
What can you guys tell me about this neat little oddity.

I do not know the answer, but perhaps a solid lead .224 bullet would work. Something to look in to.

The 22 Rem Jet uses a .223 dia bullet,same as the older 22 Hornet rifles. The cases can be made from 357 mag or 357 max cases. The biggest problem with this cartridge is that if the chambers were not kept scrumptiously clean the cases would set back and lock up the cylinder. someone at the range i go to has one and when it goes off the muzzle blast and fireball is quite impressive. By any chance does the pistol include the inserts for 22 rf,that way you can fire 22 lr as well as the Jet. H110 seems to be the powder to go to if you handload. Bullet weight is 40-45 gr BTW.

A friend had one some years back. I loaded a lot of cast bullets for it, for him. We used a reduced load that approximated the currently available .22wrm. This eliminated much of the case set-back but it was still necessary to keep the insides of the cylinder chambers dry.

He too, had some of the aluminum chamber inserts for .22rf. However, it took a small punch to remove the .22lrs, and it was slow to shoot, reload, and shoot again....... We much prefered the .22 Jet cases loaded down........The gun was pleasantly accurate with the cast bullet reloads. I believe that we were using Unique if my memory serves me correct. HKS model 10 speed loaders worked very well with it......My bet is that Lil'Gun with its much lower pressures will make a fabulous load for the .22Jet.....

He too, had some of the aluminum chamber inserts for .22rf. The orginial S&W .22RF inserts were steel, and worked quite well.
Just a little slow to reload if you only had the six they came with.
But you could flip out the empties with your fingernail.

Those aluminum ones must have been after-market, or homemade.
