I am looking to buy a friend of mine a case for his pistol grip Mossberg 500. I believe his has the 20" barrel.
I want to keep this purchase affordable. Are there any cases that are made specifically for shotguns with pistol grips?

A 20" pump with a pistol grip is gonna be right around 31" total.
This should work: http://www.bulldogcases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_22&products_id=67&zenid=8fb1a18f6876e033ec22a3f3aa217be0
Bulldog cases are decent. They have a 31" case, but that would probably be cutting it a little too close.

If it's an 18" barrel, these are pretty cool IMO: http://www.voodootactical.net/Items/ms-20-8917-p?&caSKU=ms-20-8917-p&caTitle=MOLLE%20Shotgun%20Scabbard%20fits%2018-inch%20Remington%20870%2c%20Benneli%20and%20Smiliar%20Guns
Serves as a case and a sling for hiking. My 870 in one...

What about a thick tube sock.

According to Mossberg, his pistol grip shotgun measure just over 30". I like the case linked on the 2nd post, but I am concerned it might be just a tad too small.... It would be cutting it very close....

Here's an $80 Doskocil take-down shotgun case from Cabela's. Other companies make similar things, some for less, but I've gotten good service over the years out of 2 Doskocil rifle cases.

Just measured my my Mossberg 500 20" barrel persuader with pistol grips on both ends....31". I have mine in a soft sided Ace 33" nylon case that costs about 20 bucks.

I have never seen anything like a formed case for one. Have you thought about hunting garage sales for old violin cases?
Actually the voodoo scabbard is a great option unless you really need a lockable hard case. I have the scabbard and it hold a Mossberg 500 with wood stock like a holster, and the new 930 SPX is even tighter. It is a great hiking, SHTF or wilderness carry option and it costs about $25 from Voodo Tactical.

how 'bout the bottom of a nearby body of deep water. (I guess you can tell, I don't like P.G.'s much.)

I've used a lot of Ace soft cases over the years. They make a wide variety of shotgun cases, including a few for PGO guns. See http://acecase.com/pistol-grip-shotgun-cases/ .
For their full shotgun line, see http://www.acecase.com/shotgun-cases/ . Not a shill, just a satisfied customer...

Not sure if it will fit the 20 inch barrel but you could make one yourself with PVC or ABS pipe...not the lightest option.
