Last year is was about $34.99 + tax. I'm sooo glad I checked first!!

Is this in all states they operate in, or just NY?
This is a good reminder to research transfer fees before buying a gun on line. You may not save as much as you think when this cost is factored in.

WOW thats insane. I think they might be taking advantage of the buying frenzy. The last time I bought something there the idjit behind the counter had no clue what he was doing and I haven't been back since.

The Gander Mountain in Knoxville, TN is still doing the $10.00 background check, to the best of my knowledge. It has been several months since I bought from them.
I try to steer clear of them because their prices are really high. The had a used SA XD 40 cal tactical model that they wanted $550 for. The coating was worn off in places and the left side had scratches all over it. It seemed phishy to me.

My local Ganders also charge $60 for a box of 50 handgun rounds. No, they do not come equipped with radar to hone in on the target.

It's $75 here in the Lake Mary store (Orlando area) as well. Last year it was $50 and two years ago it was $30. Of course, this is the same store that was charging $119 for a 250 round box of Remington UMC in .40 S&W yesterday.
I asked the guy working the counter why the recent hike in transfer fees. HE said it was a new corporate policy to "promote internal gun sales." YEah, right. As if raping their customers on transfers will make them want to purchase something in-store at $150 above street price.
Good selection but their prices blow.

My dealer is free for active duty and retired military. Free to Disabled Vets and LEOs. $25 for everyone else

I asked the local Gander Mountain what their transfer fee was a couple of years ago. They told me "$50.00 (or something like that), because we really don't want the business."
So I didn't give them any. No problem for me.

My transfer dealer charges $20. I would never pay more than $25, as there is a plethora of dealers that charge that or under it (at least in this area).
You can always use Gunbroker's FFL search to find a transfer dealer:

My dealer charges me $20. $75 is insane, even in NY. They clearly don't want the business (Read: Liability).

I don't know what has happened to Gander. Years ago I purchased most of my guns/reloading supplies from them. They even had a good mail order business.
Man oh man how times have changed. They are usually the highest priced seller in the area, this transfer fee increase is just so typical of them lately. They have lost my business for good.

I found a local pawn/jewlery store that charges $10.70! I LOVE that place :)

It seems that since Gander went on a retail store opening spree, they have gone waaaaaay downhill. I've had gift cards, but couldn't justify using them on things that were priced at retail plus 50%. Of course, here in FL, BASS is no better

Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI just charged me $65.00 to do the FFL and ship a pistol. Seems a might high to me. Just about a few months ago it was $40.00ish.

IF that was for their fee AND the shipping, depending on the mode, that might no be too bad really

My FFL charges $25 for a transfer. When I received 2 pistols at once, he still charged me only $25. He said it didn't take any extra work. I'll keep using him.:)

gander mountain blows.... I would expect them to go out of business in the near future... they have these bass pro shop prices, without any of the bass pro shops flair....
sometimes even if academy has something cheaper, I go to gander and make them price match it just to show them how ridiculous their prices are

That price is obscene. It's very common here in Dallas/Ft.Worth area for FFl's to charge $15-$25 for a transfer.
Before I buy a gun that's not local, I check:
http://www.gunbroker.com/User/DealerNetwork.asp
and:

(MODS: please feel free to delete post if this is unacceptable, with my apologies.)

I believe that is a company wide fee, not just a New York fee. Also if you buy a gun FROM them, and ship it then they charge you something in the $45 range...

My local dealer raised the transfer fee 1000%.

That's a total rip-off. Check on Gunbroker. I've always been able to find small time FFL's who do it for $10 total. They're usually working out of their house.

It's their way of saying "We really don't want to be in the -transfer- business, but if you want to do it bad enough we'll take your money."
Just vote with your feet and take your transfer business elsewhere ... no biggie.

Yep. The best thing I've ever seen at Gander was some $80 Mosins.
Gander is about the last place I'll go for anything.

One local dealer said they charged $25 + sales tax on the firearm purchased, regardless of what state it came from...

Hey, quit dissin' Ginder Mountain ... it's the greatest place in the world! Where else can I take my grandchildren on a rainy day and let them crawl all over the boats and ATVs, and play in the tents, without ever being bothered by a salesperson? Indeed, I can never find a salesperson even if I wanted one. And where else can you go and handle hundreds of shotguns and rifles without anybody caring if your hands are clean or bothering to wipe the fingerprints off when you put them back on the rack, without ever being bothered by a salesperson? I heft the firearms at GM, then buy elsewhere---that is why I love them so.
My local New York FFL charges 25 bucks for a handgun, 20 bucks for a long gun. I oftentimes buy online, assuming the shipping is reasonable, to avoid the NYS tax.

One place in South OKC charges me $10 for up to 4 anything and the guy close to my house - but very far from my work -charges me $15 for up to 4.
I've never bought 4 pistols/rifles/shotguns at once - but I might... if I can get permission from the warden:p

I don't follow some posters on here...your dealer is charging a transfer fee + a background check fee? Is that something that's particular to your state? In NC a CCW permit means no background check (it's an NICS alternative); if no CCW a purchase permit is $5 from your Sheriff and good for 5 years. My dealer charges $15 period. If I buy the gun from his inventory the transfer fee is $0. Plain and simple. Are some of your dealers charging a transfer fee on stuff you buy from them, above what it costs to purchase?
