I have read numerous threads, especially at www.battlerifles.com, and the overwhelming majority of contributors believe the mount is not very good, and neither is the scope.

Question: Has anyone here at THR had any experience with either the 3rd-Gen mount or the SA 6x40 scope?

Thanks-

Alex

My experience with the 3rd gen mount was bad. I could not get it to hold zero for the life of me.

I have no experience with the scope.

I have that scope mounted on my LTR.
I have absolutely no problem with it.
I have used it out to 500 yards, I had no problem identifying targets with it out to that range.
The "drop compensator" works as advertised, I've used it with Federal 168g GMM from 1-500 with the impacts tracking faithfully to the reticle.
I've been able to shoot quite a few tiny groups with it and it has retained zero with no issues.
It is particularly versatile but for target shooting it has served me well.

If you're out to scope an M1A, forget the Springfield 3rd gen mount; you'd be better off with duct tape or velcro ;) Seems like ARMS or Brookfield are the folks to go to if you want a strong mount for an M1A, something like the ARMS #18 with the #22 rings, that'd probably get you one of the best systems for sticking a scope on that rifle. Not cheap, mind you, but then again you only have to buy quality once.

McCann makes a mount that is good, by all accounts i've heard.

I have that very setup on my National Match M-1A and it works great. I've been using it now for nearly five years and the scope and mount hold their zero very well. The mount is repeat zero hold and it works. I've had mine off many times, put it back on, and it still puts the rounds right where they need to be (using Federal 168 grain boat-tail hollow point of course). The range finder on the SA 6X40 works perfect with that round as well. ;)

I cant say about the scope but I have a 3rd gen scope mount for years with no problems. On and off, and on, etc.
