Hi there everyone a while ago I bought 2 .45ACP pistols (Kimber, and a HK45c) one for home protection and the HK for conceal carry, now I can’t find ammo for them. Would it be better to sell them and go with another cal such as a 9MM where ammo is available?

It's always good to have a second gun in a different caliber. In my area (Chattanooga) there is usually 40S&W on the shelves at WalMart, and very little 9mm. Why not trade one of your .45s for a nice GLOCK 27, 23 or 22 in 40S&W?

Thanks Marshall but for some reason I not as accurate with a .40 as with other cal's I have shot.

Look into one of the 357SIG/.40S&W SIG's. Either one can be the other with a simple $160 barrel change, and the 357SIG or .40S&W seems to always be one of the few remaining boxes of ammo on the shelves of our local Walmarts in these times of famine. Even here in the sticks its finally catching up, and I havent seen 9mm or .380 for awhile now.

I personally prefer the 357SIG, but the .40 shoots just as well out of the same gun.

Just buy a upper silde/barrel assembly in a different calibure for your Kimber of course you'll have to purchase magazines for the calibure you choose. I'm sure you can do the same for the HK.

There are lots of places online that have 45 ACP. Now try to find some 380 ACP and let me know.

How much do you usually buy at one time and how much do you shoot?

Historically, buying in bulk online has usually been the cheapest. Its still probably your best bet for finding it these days too.

Even buying SD ammo by the box is usually cheaper, especially when you consider that most dealers only sell 20 round boxes for only a few dollars less than what you pay for 50 round boxes of the same ammo online.

I shoot most of the major auto loading calibers, and buying in bulk, the .45ACP has always been the most expensive, 9mm the cheapest, and 357SIG/.40S&W right in the middle, and costing the same.

If you can find someone who has it for a decent price, buy a couple of cases to start, and add to it each month as you go along. You'll soon have a nice buffer to keep you going.

Ammo availability is turning around and should get better rather than worse. If it were me, I would get a used 9mm -- ie Glock to hold you over until ammo becomes available. What would happen if say 9mm ammo were gone & your 45s were in someone else's safe?

Do you have zero self-defense rounds? Usually the big stores will still have some of them, albeit at very high prices.

I would recommend owning a pistol in every major caliber, but I know this is not an option for everyone. I have noticed that if a store is out of one caliber, they have some stock of another.
For Example: Walmart here will have 45acp and 9mm in stock , but wont have 40 cal or 357sig. Or, they will have 40 cal and 357sig but no 45acp or 9mm.

I might have missed it in another post, but consider a .22 conversion kit for your Kimber. Cheap shooting on the same platform.

I'd hold onto both those guns, as they are both too nice to part with (I LOVE the HK45).

As others have said, ammo should return soon. I live in Northern VA and have no problem finding ammo - whether at Dicks Sporting Goods or Wal-Mart.

Good luck!

Never limit yourself to one caliber.

Now, do you need another excuse to buy more guns?

:D
