I would like to know how old the gun is.
I found a few sets of numbers.
Mod.10-6
96689
g-15
these numbers were inside the where the cylinder goes in.

The Model 10-6 was made 1962-67 (correct the typo, should 1977 not 1967). If you send me the serial from the butt I can pin it down a little closer for you. It will have a letter C or D prefix.

Welcome to The Firing Line!

The S&W Model 10-6 has a pot-metal cylinder and will probably blow up if you try to shoot modern ammo. I'm in Texas too and as a show of good neighborliness will take it off your hands for proper disposal. :)

Seriously, if the gun is in good shape and hasn't been abused it's a great revolver. SaxonPig is setting you right with the dating. How about posting some pictures of your wheelgun so we can see what you have?

or else I am seriously in error some way. It may be a typo but the Catalog of Smith and Wesson indicates the 10-6 was made from 1962-1977, not 1962-1967. I have a Model 10-5 D8101xx and that serial is indicated to be made in 1975-76. I am a little confused, however, about the 10-5 and 10-6 overlapping of model manufacture. Can anyone explain this??

Moewaddle: the 10-5 & 10-6 were made concurrently. The 10-5 was the tapered (skinny) barrel and the 10-6 was the heavy barrel. They were replaced in 1977 by the 10-7 & 10-8.

for clarifying. I thought that must be what the book was trying to say but I was not sure. I appreciate people, such as you, taking time to help others learn more. By the way, I really love my SW 10-5. I am not a very good shooter but it seems to do a lot of the work for me and is a real piece of Great American craftsmanship. I like the bigger barrel better than my pencil barrel so maybe I will look for a SW with the large barrel to partner with my 10-5. Again, thanks.
