Go to your local gunshop/sporting goods store and purchase a "gun cleaning kit". Walmart has them also, and is the better deal.

Buy Breakfree CLP. The CLP is for Cleaner, Lubricant, Preservative (prevents rust). For the very occasional shooter, it is all you really need for cleaning and lubrication. It is especially good at prohibiting rust. Also get the gun cleaning kit mentioned with the rods, brushes, etc. in the caliber for your gun.

Somebody will come along and give you a list of a half-dozen chemicals to buy. You don't need them for what you want.

Shooter's Choice powder solvent
Clenzoil lubricant
real cloth patches
Dewey coated cleaning rod and loop
brass bore brushes

All you really need is:
-bottle/can of Breakfree CLP
-pistol cleaning rod (cheap brass would work fine for pistols)
-patch pusher for each bore size (cheap plastic works fine too)
-Q-tips
-and an old T shirt that you can cut up into patches.

You can easily get any handgun clean enough with that list.
Some Hoppes #9 will clean fouling a little faster than CLP if you want to add that to the list.

Some nice to have items would be:
-stiff nylon brush or old tooth brush
-brass/bronze brush if the fouling is caked on
-copper solvent if you're anal about getting the bore perfectly clean

+1 Conan. Go and buy the gun cleaning kit from wallyworld. Also buy patches, a bottle of Hoppes, and a can of Remoil. But if you're gonna store your gun for a long time and want to prevent rust, I urge you to buy CorrosionX or Eezox and lightly coat the gun inside and out before putting it away.

But if you're gonna shoot it often or have many guns to take care of you want the best bang for the buck and wallyworld sells everything you need, the cleaning kit, Hoppes #9 solvent, and Remoil. Don't get too caught up on which oil is the best and stuff because in all honesty all oils get dried up or worn away at the friction points with a few hundred rounds. People have used WD40 and 10W30 for years without problems. But Remoil is so cheap that you could afford to get this gun specific oil over general purpose stuff and still come up on top.

Also, getting good oil such as CorrosionX is still a cheap investment because one bottle will last a long time if you only use it as oil and not a CLP. I recommend Hoppes because you can go through solvents really fast and Hoppes is cheap and cleans really well.
