Need help with my 870.

I am going to go turkey hunting for the first time in the fall and I have a Remington 870 7 shot with an 18in barrel thats not threaded for chokes that is used for home defense.
My friend whos taking me said I can use one of his shotguns to go, but I'd like to use mine.
The problem is I don't think the 18in barrel will not have enough range and it is not threaded for chokes.
I don't want to spend a ton of money on a new barrel so what about getting it threaded for chokes? Do you think that would help?
If so, about how much money is it to get your barrel threaded for chokes?
Thanks

Just buy a 21" Express Turkey barrel. Heck, sell your old barrel here and use the Turkey barrel with a skeet choke for home defense, full or extra full for turkey. Barrel length does not effect range appreciably. Barrel length beyond 18" is mostly for balance and sighting, not for extra velocity.

The barrel length does not determine range, the choke helps to determine the pattern at various ranges - the tighter the constriction, the greater the pattern density at longer distances.
Briley and others can alter your barrel for chokes, or you might be cheaper to look into getting another barrel for hunting that already has the chokes.

Buying another barrel may be cheaper than adding chokes on yours. If your friend is willing to loan you a shotgun, can he also loan you a barrel?

buy yourself a good barrel. You need not get a REMINGTON made remington 870 barrel, Mossberg makes some good Remy 870 barrels.
It will open up a whole world of hunting for you. If all else fails, and you don't like it you can sell it for 75% of the price to buy

I -believe- that the "rifling" in the front of the barrel is a choke insert with rifling on it. IF that is the case, you could remove it and replace with a choke insert of your choosing.
Call and ask them to be sure.
Enjoy!

oneounceloads and Badger Arms have the right idea. One of the great gun/hunting writers was Jack O'Connor. A question once asked of Jack was how much further will a 26" bbl shoot over a 24"? His reply "About 2!"
