I've been wondering what the extra designation is on the model 10 as in "10-6" and "10-5". I think the one I used to own was a "10-7". Thanks, X

The -x is a notation telling you there was a production change for that model. The number after the dash tells you what was done in that production change.
For example: The M10-7 (1977) Gas ring changed from yoke to cylinder on heavy barrel model.

book that is loaded with great information and photos....THE STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH AND WESSON. Make sure and buy the 3rd edition and buy it from Amazon or some other internet seller and you will probably get it at a much better price than paying full MSRP for it at a local shop or gun show.

Handloads.com has a reference page with the S-W engineering changes explained, up through about 1985 or so.

You can use that for most older guns you need to ask about.

My pleasure. I try to slip that link out there when appropriate - it is a very handy reference to bookmark and check in on periodically. If you use it regularly, and spend a 1/2 studying it, after a while, you will learn all the S&W model numbers by heart, and understand the major engineering changes. It is a really, really handy web page for the S&W fan and you don't need to go lug out reference books. Supica and Nahas' SCSW is a really great book, but you can't lug it everywhere or reach for it all the time.
