I believe law enforcement personnel have as great a legal right to support weird causes as the rest of us; I also believe if he's lending support to anti-Second Amendment bigotry or any other cause while acting as the police chief, he's politicking on the job. There are probably both laws and departmental policies pertaining to that sort of behavior.
