buddy just got one given to him. neither of us have any clue about eastern weapons. it's pretty beat up, what needs to be checked out or upgraded? we dony even know if it's functional at this point.

also, what the hell is all this "Compliant" crap about with parts.. compliant with what?

As long as it is not modified it should be compliant. Check the bore and if it is decent go shoot it. Heck I've heard of people trying to NOT get their SKS to shoot and it still fired every time.

You'll love it regardless of how beat up it is.

www.sksboards.com should give you all the info you need. BUT first check out www.surplusrifles.com they tell you TONS of great information about your SKS. If you want to modify the SKS or if it is already modified it will need 4-5 parts replaced (the Norinco has standards parts, Yugo need to replace +1 extra because of muzzle attachment). On my Romanian SKS I added the Tasco t6 stock (1), 20 rnd detachable magazine (counts as 2 parts--follower, floor plate), tasco gas piston (1), tasco handguard (1)(comes with stock), and operating rod (0). For a total of 5 parts replaced.

Complient with Federal Law 922(r).

You won't have any problems with a stock SKS unless you start putting pistol grips, folding stocks, and 30 round mags on it.

Or want to remove the bayonet.

And on a Yugo, remove the grenade launcher adapter or grenade sight. :uhoh:

Well, as I remember, my Norinco SKS no longer had the bayonet on it when new, and it was against the law to put one back on.

Least mine was that way.

They were selling chinese spike bayonets for tent stakes because they couldn't be sold with the guns.
