I have an older airweight J frame and I just noticed that the crane moves a little bit forward and backward inside its channel. What causes this and how is it fixed? Is it dangerous to shoot/carry the gun like this? The movement is very, very slight I checked the crane retaining screw above the trigger guard and its tight,so whats going on with my gun here?

Your gun has developed endshake. As long as the gun functions properly, it's a non issue. It's a problem when you start having missfires. Just about all s & w revolvers will develop a little endshake after time.

I suppose that's sort of like saying a malignant tumor is nothing to worry about until the doctor says you have incurable cancer. Waiting until the revolver starts to misfire may be too late. :uhoh:
You may be able to correct end shake in the yoke by installing a new yoke screw. If not, I would return the gun to Smith & Wesson and let them take care of it. There are several possible solutions (including a new yoke), and while they are at it the revolver with get a thorough examination, and anything else that’s detected will be fixed too. ;)

It is also possible someone? put the wrong screws in the wrong holes.
The one that retains the crane in the frame used to be hand fitted by the factory to give minimum crane movement.
But the other one behind it on the sideplate by the grip would also fit that hole.
Take them both out and see if one works better then the other one.

rcmodel thanks I will try that and report back here with the results. I know it wasn't me who did this as I bought the gun used.
