Has anyone use suplus WC 860. My gunshop has a bunch of 8lbs containers for $80.00. He says it is equivalent to Aa 1680.

WC 860 is a very slow magnum rifle type powder suitable for the 50 BMG and some other large case magnum rifles. It is on the other end of the burn rate chart from AA1680. Your shop mis-spoke or doesn't know it's powders. WC 860 is similiar to H870 or AA 8700 in burn rate. AA 1680 is the fastest rifle powder made by Accurate Arms, AA8700 the slowest rifle powder and WC 860 is close to the same speed as 8700.

I've only used it in 6.5x55mm and plan to use it in 7mm Remington Magnum. I've burned a lot of it in the former.

It's the first powder I've used that actually shoots better groups with magnum primers. It is REALLY slow. It has no need of case fillers, as it is it's own filler.

Your correct about WC 860 being a slow powder. I looked it up after posting. I'll inform my gunshop. I have plenty of powder now but the price is right and I might just purchase a container of this. I reload for a .330 Dakota, 84grains of RL 22 and I'm just about done with my supply of RL 22 powder. I developed this load in the early '90's before RL 25 and the other slower powders that are available today. I also load a Ruger #1 in .243 26" barrel with IMR 7828. WC 860 would be an inexpensive replacement.

I once heard it compared to trying to burn wet sand!........that said, I have a buddy that bought 32 pounds of the stuff, gave me one jug and has used the rest for casual plinking with various .30 caliber cartridges..........he just scoops a case full and lets fly, no less! Kinda black smokeless, I guess..........Surprisingly he gets some good groups and like he's said, its cheap enough and doesn't really pose any hazard...........I tried it and gave the 8 pounder given me to a kid that has a .50...............which is what it was designed for to begin with.

I'd note that I chrono'd a couple of his loads in '06 and 8mm, both seemed to hover somewhere around 2M....perhaps a bit less. No pressure indications at all, so apparently it is safe enough to tinker with.
