Hello,
Along with my FTRB thread/problem, I now discovered a new problem. Can anyone explain how/why this occurred, as I rarely use the thumb safety. If light pushed the thumb safety will move approx. halfway to the "ON" position with the hammer down. If the hammer is cocked, the safety will move back toward the "OFF" position, not sure if it goes all the way. The normal use of the safety seem proper, except for a slight click in the thumb safety click test. Thanks for any responses.

I had one like that. It did not at first impair operation of the gun and would hold safe with the hammer cocked. But it wore until it would move farther and farther when uncocked until it would block slide travel which made loading the gun inconvenient. So I had it replaced.

The only repair I know of is to replace the thumb safety. Some fitting of the safety lug to the sear is usually required, although I got lucky and had a Wilson go right in on a Springfield that I was deleting the ambi on.

Assuming you are talking about a 1911 safety?
It sounds pretty normal to me.
It shouldn't be able to move all the way to ON Safe with the hammer down.
And it should about take itself OFF if you cock it with it imporoprly positioned like that.

Thanks for responding. I've personally never seen this happen prior, the last time I noted checking, nor on either of my other two 1911s. So you feel that it's OK and you've seen it happen on other Colt 1911's? Take care.

Mostly I think it's a fitting issue.
A .001" here and there taken off the sear or safety locking lug and it will go partially ON, hammer down.
Unless it will go all the way ON hammer down, or not take itself mostly OFF when the hammer is cocked, and it passes all the safety checks, I wouldn't be overly concerned.
I have a Colt that does it some, and an Essex I built years ago that doesn't.

Great to hear, muchas gracias as our Spanish friends would say if they were in my position, so thanks you. But it does block the slide from being hand racked.

Why are you trying to ever put the thumb safety on with the hammer down anyway??
That is not supposed to be done.
It is supposed to lock the slide when it is on with the hammer cocked.
If it gets bumped partly on sometimes, you need to fix the safety flat the plunger bears on, or the plunger & spring itself that makes it snap up, and snap down.

Not doing on purpose. Did by accident a couple of times and just noticed this. It seems to take some force to get it to happen, so I think for a casual bump, I'll be fine. Thanks for your follow up.

It could be a misshaped safety, but the usual cause of a safety moving when it shouldn't is a weak safety/slide stop spring. Also, I note that some clones have frame holes that are out of spec allowing the safety to move outward in the on or off position, not good.

Maybe a deeper hole in the thumb safety might help to engage the pin. I hope so.
