18.5" Barrel for Deer Hunting?

After hanging out here long enough, I'm starting to think that a shotgun for HD might be a good idea. The model I'm most seriously considering is the Benelli Nova Tactical (with 18.5" barrel). It seems to fit me well, and I'm particularly fond of the ghost-ring sights.

I then started thinking (since there are significant portions of our state which are shotgun-only for deer hunting) that it might be pretty decent for deer. What are your thoughts? How do 12ga slugs perform out of the shorter barrel lengths as compared to longer ones? Is there much loss of velocity or accuracy?

Shorter barrels are no problem. FWIW my 870 has a 20 inch (IIRC) barrel with factory rifle sights. Haven't had any complaints from various deer and hogs. :)

Nary a complaint here either. My two "Serious" shotguns have a nice pile of venison to their credit. One has an 18" barrel. t'other a 20".

Both have peeps, which help immensely....

If I am hunting in very heavy cover, I often take a shotgun. A short barrel is a great advantage in cover like that. The shotgun, (with slugs, thank you) is a great performer on deer or hogs.
