Which .45ACP

May 31, 2009, 10:06 PM

Which .45ACP pistol do you recommend?

-Glock 21SF
-Sig Sauer P220

I am a little torn because I have experience with Glocks. I like how Glocks have all passive safeties. HK makes fine weapons. I have shot their MP-5's, but they have active safeties which must manually and consciously be disengaged before firing. The P220 has a smaller magazine capacity than the other choices and I have heard that the P220 is one of the weaker-designed .45ACPs. Can anyone confirm this? However, the Sig has passive safeties such as an extra long trigger pull for the first shot.

With this being said, please help me decide what .45 I should buy. What are your reasons? Which is most accurate, reliable, rugged, etc.? Thanks.

Can't really beat a glock.... Rugged, reliable and simple to maintain....

For CCW would recommend a Glock 30....:)

I would vote for the g21. It has a better trigger than any gun fired DA.

None of the above. I have pistols in .45 acp in the following brands:

Colt 1911
Colt 1991
Witness (several)
Springfield XD

My favorite of all of them is the Springfield XD. It's compact, very accurate, and holds 14 rounds of .45 ammunition, with 13 in the magazine and one in the chamber. It fits my hand like a glove and is the only model of handgun that I can close my eyes, bring the gun up into shooting position, and be on target when I open my eyes. It also has the passive safeties you mention in your desired characteristics. It's also cheaper!

Hope this helps.

Have you looked at the CZ97?

Check out the CZ 97B or the CZ 97BD (decocker version).

May 31, 2009, 11:09 PM
Ahhh you left out some really good choices such as OTHER or 1911 and XD so I couldn't vote...

May 31, 2009, 11:57 PM
I'm a Glock fan, but I really like the XD 45 compact.

Of your choices, I have not fired the 21sf, I can't get a hk45 because my state has not deemed them safe to own  and my P220 was a lemon. So, I'd go w/ the USP45 -- mine has had almost 40k problem free rounds since AA

June 1, 2009, 08:10 PM
My vote goes to Ruger P345.

June 1, 2009, 08:11 PM
How do I vote none of the above?

June 1, 2009, 08:33 PM
I voted for Sig because my hands aren't big enough for hi-cap .45s. However, if fighting breaks out in the streets, I'm grabbing my USP (in .40).

June 1, 2009, 08:49 PM
None of the above in .45acp.

Kimber 2, S&W 2, and Armscor.

I just shot my west german SIG P220 this afternoon. It is such an accurate, reliable pistol. I was shooting at 12 yards today and after 2 mags the center of my 7" bull was gone:) Its like shooting a .45 cal laser!

June 2, 2009, 02:31 PM
After my Kimber Custom 2 ,I have to say the Glock 45 acp sf. or reg frame . It is really easy to shoot accurately and holds a good number of bullets. Haven't shot the Sig 220 so can't comment on it.

I didn't vote, since I did not see the FNP-45 on the list. It's my choice for hi-cap .45acp - I have one and a 1911 to turn to as well, but my primary HD pistol is the FNP-45.

June 2, 2009, 03:01 PM
May have to add FNP-45 to the list also, after reading the Gunblast report saying the FNP thinks it's a target pistol . It's one accurate pistol that should be on anyones short list.

Extremely accurate, totally reliable.

Great ergomomics, handles like a dream. :D

June 2, 2009, 03:27 PM
S&W M&P otherwise the USP.

June 2, 2009, 03:29 PM
I took a good hard look at the CZ 97 awhile back. If you're in the market for a solid .45 I wouldn't overlook it.

June 2, 2009, 03:34 PM
My FNP-45 is a wonderful handgun. Great shooter and those 15 round magazines are great comfort. My 1911 is still a great 45, but it sits in the case now while I shoot the FNP-45

Springfield XD was my very close second. I prefer hammer fired over striker and the FNP-45 is made in America by American workers.

June 2, 2009, 04:31 PM
I have the Sig P220, and I would probably put it and my SW1911 slightly ahead of your other choices, but I like those as well - skeeter_08

June 2, 2009, 04:55 PM
Since I don't see Kimber 1911 on the list:confused: I'll have to go with the Glock.

I have a model 21 that is probably the most reliable gun out of the box I have ever owned.

June 2, 2009, 05:06 PM
+1 to the FNP45. It is a fantastic piece of firepower.

June 2, 2009, 06:06 PM
if you can cc, XD45,

if for home defense... 1911. From the choices above, HK USP.

June 2, 2009, 06:07 PM
Sig 220 - always have wanted to try one, and have no interest
in the others. 1911 / S&W 625 shooter.

June 2, 2009, 10:35 PM
I have to say the SIG P220 Is where the list should start and end.
It is as reliable or more so then Glocks,
It is the most accurate out of the box .45acp in DA/SA that is in production
I carry one all day any more, and love it. i went from a Wilson CQB, to my P220 and dont regret it. i own 59 1911's and they no longer get carried except for special occassions.:D

June 3, 2009, 11:13 AM
The new short frame .45 Glocks haven't been trouble free if you read Glock Talk. I trust my 2nd gen G-30 though.

I owned four USP's and they were all trouble free, they would even feed my semi wadcutter (jacketed) loads. My G-30 will not.

My USP .45 never had a failure of any kind, and if it weren't shaped like a brick, I would still own it.

I would trust the new HK45 sight unseen over any other .45 out there for out of the box reliablilty.

Does HK make a LEM kit for the fullsize usp?

You might consider a usp compact 45, mine is almost a fullsize pistol!!

The make a LEM kit for DAO if that's your M.O....

June 3, 2009, 11:40 AM
I voted usp for the fact that I like the safety but the hk45 would do nicely too

June 3, 2009, 02:44 PM
I chose sig but the hk45 was close behind. It was a tie so I did eeny miny miny mo :)

June 3, 2009, 02:54 PM
I absolutely love this pistol...and I am most definately sending in the coupon for the .45ACP conversion at $399

Why? With a little shopping I would find a "whole" 220 for that money.

Most LE individuals, whether Federal or State, are issued Glock weapons for a reason---dependability in a life threatening situation! Our Navy Seals are usually assigned Sig Sauer-- either will serve one well, but it's all about the training, range time and familiarity of your weapon of choice!

January 12, 2013, 01:28 PM
Glock weapons are issued because they can be issued much cheaper than HK, SIG, Colt etc.

I love my XD 45. But if you have the funds I would say go for HK everytime.

January 12, 2013, 01:39 PM
SIG P220 as long as you are looking at the SAO model, otherwise the HK USP.

January 12, 2013, 02:31 PM
Since I retired from LEO my every day carry is a Sig p220 Equinox. It fits my hand like a glove, and shoots perfectly.

January 12, 2013, 02:39 PM
Glock 21 gets my vote, with the Sig 220 a close second.

Not knowing your level of experience or intended use the G21's simple manual of arms and consistent trigger pull is a good balance of compromises. The P220 can be made to fire DAO with a heavy pull. If you are new to firearms the Glock will be easier to master. If you are experienced and looking to expand your horizons the P220 is a fantastic platform for a 45ACP.

Some others have suggested XD, FN, 1911's. Aside from some higher end 1911's (ones that don't have barrel rust issues) the guns on your list cover the 45ACP pretty well.

January 12, 2013, 07:51 PM
I use to be a 1911 bigot. My carry gun is a Colt officer's model, and I have owned full size Springfields and shot Colts and Kimbers. Recently I traded for a Glock 21 SF. What a revelation. This is probably the most accurate .45 I have ever shot besides a highly-tuned Gold Cup. There is something special about 13 shots of 45 ACP in your hand.

January 12, 2013, 08:58 PM
For me, Glock is king in 9mm but HK rules the roost in .45 ACP

Three and a half year old thread and the OP hasn't been back in three and a half years. My guess is he/she has made a decision by now.

SIG P220 SAO would be my choice, then the Glock G21SF.
