mcdonl June 1, 2009, 07:41 AM I have a question about bargain 1911's... I see some 1911's out there that are about in my price range for my next pistol... $500 or so.
Is the 1911 platform similar to the AR-15 in that you can upgrade components that are perhaps the weaker parts of the bargain gun over time?
Thank you,
Leroy

Jolly Rogers June 1, 2009, 07:49 AM Basically yes. However the parts may not drop in and may need to be fitted to the frame/ slide to pass all the safety checks.

rduckwor June 1, 2009, 08:50 AM Go to www.brownells.com and look at all the 1911 parts they sell.
The 1911 has been around so long, everybody seems to make something for them.
Choose your base model carefully as some have strayed from the ranch in terms of build and dimension.
Good Luck and welcome to the downward spral of 1911 disease.

jhco June 1, 2009, 09:09 AM I know its a crazy idea but, instead of spending 500 or so and then spending 150-200 upgradeing it over time why not cut out the middle person and buy a gun in the 700 range and get the parts already on it?
Question II- What upgrades would you be looking for. This would help in maybe make a suggestion on a brand/model.
mcdonl June 1, 2009, 09:20 AM JHCO.... My gun budget comes from the fact I run a seasonal lawncare business on the side... I have no other spare money, and it will take saving every penny I have to pull together $500 or so by the end of the season... then NEXT summer I may be able to pay for upgrades.
I own many bargain guns, and I like them a lot so I may never perform any upgrades, and I could care less whos name is stamped on the guns and as long it is as reliable as my Hi-Point and shoots as straight I will use it as is, out of the box.
As far as question #2... like I said. I target shoot, and just want a 1911... odd's are I would never do any upgrades, I just wanted to know if the opportunity was there.
Thanks!

BHP FAN June 1, 2009, 10:07 AM Rock Island Arsenal. You can spend more, but it's tough to get more gun.
rondog June 1, 2009, 11:05 AM It's Rock Island Armory, not Arsenal.
Get a Tactical model. It's a full-size 5" 1911, that comes with a beavertail, combat hammer, skeleton trigger, ambi safety, and upgraded sights, for around $400 from Sarco, Centerfire Systems and Bellshire.
They come in blued, 2-tone and satin nickel. This is a satin version.

I took my GI model and made my own Tactical out of it, but mine is polished and hot blued.

blazerking78 June 2, 2009, 02:12 AM Go for a Taurus PT1911. They are reasonably priced and you get a lot of custom features for around $600.
ROBBY.1911 June 2, 2009, 02:43 AM don't forget metro arms for a loaded gun right at $425. not that kind of loaded, the springfield kind.
Jimfern June 2, 2009, 10:23 AM I bought a like new Colt Commander from a fellow member on this site for just a tad more than you are talking about, but that price included shipping it to me. Patience is your friend.
Of course when I got it, I couldn't leave it alone and added some Smith and Alexander parts to it. By the way, they are excellent to deal with.
