Just received a Leapers Compact 3-12x44, model SCP3-M3124AOMD-A.

This one was really, really poor. It's on the way back to the supplier.

I guess it's true that Leapers is hit or miss.

I couldn't get it to focus at any magnification, even at 25yds. The glass was that poor. I wasn't expecting a particularly crisp image but neither did I think the sight picture would look like vaseline was smeared on the AO lense.

The focus ring was almost useless.

I put the fixed 6x32 Leapers, which has always served me well, back on the rifle. I'll sacrifice the magnification for clarity.

I bought 2 Leapers scopes back in 2005 -- a "6/32 Red/Green Mil-Dot AO" for a .22 rifle and another one (a 4x32 "Bug Buster" with same Red/Green Mil-Dot reticle) for a pellet rifle -- and they were fine.

Sorry to hear you had trouble with one.

Maybe there REALLY WAS Vaseline on the lens?

Just kidding...I'm sure you'd know better.

I too have an older 6/32 Red/Green Mil-Dot AO by Leapers.

That's why I bought this one. If it was of the same quality I would have been happy with it.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

I don't know if Leapers has gone downhill since 2005 (although many people will say they didn't have very far go go being lower-end products to begin with), but I do think writing them off because of one bad scope is a bit premature.

If you were to get an exchange -- and the 2nd one ALSO is bad -- then of course I'd not try a thrid. As for me though, I'd buy another Leapers today (in 2009) if I needed one.

Ideally, I'd like a Leupold Gold Ring for my .270 -- maybe even a Leupold for my .22 -- but it's just not a big priority right now ($$ are going elsewhere). And considering the ranges I would be shooting where I am presently (if a SHTF scenarion occured, or more likely, dealing with looters at my condo/apartment complex in a post-hurricane disaster, like it was here after Hurricane Ike), I don't really need long-distance or even a scoped gun for that matter, JUST A GUN!

I have my 6x32 Leapers scope with me but was not able to zero it in (on my .22 rifle) before I moved down here, and now, I have no real place nearby to do that, so I took the scope off. I DO know the iron sights are spot-on...that will have to do. Besides, in my case of likely confrontations, dealing with looters is mostly a nightime situation, so scopes really don't apply in that context.

Good luck,
