I was at Cabela's today and saw what looked to be a very good condition S&W 1000 in 12 gauge for $299. It had nice wood, the bluing was nice, no nicks, scratches or dings, so why is it so cheap? Is that what these things go for? Granted, it was a fixed choke at IC, but still, it seemed to be too nice for that low a price. I almost bought it, but I already have 5 shotguns, and my wife would scalp me if I bought another.

I never owned one of them, but I understand they were/are pretty good guns. I believe that they were made in Japan by a company named Howa.

These guns were made for only a few years under the S&W trade name. I think it was during the late 70's and/or early 80's. A little research on the "net" should provide more details.

They were indeed made by Howa, when Bangor Punta owned S&W. The model 1000 is a good gun, but the pump model, the 960 I believe, wasn't as well made.

I've owned several S&W 1000s and been very pleased with them. They're relatively light and they pointed well for me.
