hso June 2, 2009, 08:03 PM I was just told today that Case laid off over 100 folks this year so I went looking and confirmed that the venerable W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery is suffering hard economic times and has had two layoffs this year.
I think I'll go out and buy a nice little Case knife.
Perhaps a Peanut just to make SM happy. ;)

Valkman June 2, 2009, 08:22 PM That's hard to hear about. ai hope they make it through these times!
Phydeaux642 June 2, 2009, 08:35 PM I guess I'll have to go pick up a couple of knives to help them out. I need a Sod Buster Jr. anyway.
Brian Williams June 2, 2009, 10:11 PM I just today bought a sodbuster and another little one from Lowes today.
Sad news indeed.
We have lost Camillius and Shrade, we need to support W.R.Case.
For the first time in who-knows-when, I do not have a yellow handled, Peanut with CV blades.
I guess I had better save up, and buy some, just in case the worst happens.
And yellow handled with CV blade Sodbuster Jr, Slimline Trapper Stockman ...
If...and a big if, with current concerns of one hand opening knives, and waiting to see how all this plays out...
The traditional slipjoint /pocketknife was never dead to many of us. These knives are proven, and have history. From time to time, an increase in interest and sales occur.
Not sure how well the Case Collector bit is doing, but Case might want to consider doing more knives in CV, with more handle options as many of us have suggested to Case for too long now.
The CV blade is proven, and if matters get more nuts with restrictions, what is proven is going to be needed in the marketplace again.
Re: One Arm Jack I wonder how this old, proven pattern is going to be defined.
Too many Veterans of War, with amputations used this knife, as did those with Arthritis, and various persons in all sorts of work. Police, Fire, Ambulance, Warehouse, Electrician, Plumber, Hikers, Hunters...etc.
Some things just "are", like a Case pocketknife and Zippo lighter.
Piraticalbob June 3, 2009, 01:54 AM I agree that Case needs to add more handle options to the CV steel knives, typically they only come in black and yellow Delrin. Case knives with CV steel and stag handles would be a personal favorite, especially in a scout/camp pattern.
And frankly, since Camillus went belly up, I'd think that Case would pursue the Boy/Cub Scout market; they already make that pattern, and it's no problem for Case to offer a custom shield featuring the Boy Scout logo. And they could sell their smaller camp knife pattern as a Cub Scout knife.
KenWP June 3, 2009, 08:04 AM Case knives are almost impposible to buy up here due to their ignorant marketing practices. One of the biggest knife shops in the country has one Case knife for sale due to not being able to deal with them and get stock. I have had to buy them thru a collector in ARK. due to online stores refuseing to deal across the border anymore.
bikerdoc June 3, 2009, 09:41 AM On my way to lowes to get a couple. Dont need em, just want em!
Deltaboy June 6, 2009, 10:25 PM Dang it I just bought one a sod buster jr last fall and I have been eyeing a canoe style for a while.
Doug S June 6, 2009, 10:53 PM I agree that we need to support the company. I've bought quite a few Case knives in recent months.
Zeke/PA June 7, 2009, 03:44 PM A few years back, a local Mom & PoP hardware store was closing out Case products and advertised a 50% off deal.
I was selective in that I only wanted boxed knives and paperwork and I added vastly to my pocketknife supply.
I hope that Case dosen't go the way of Schrade and Camilus.

Is it a Case thing, or is it a Canadian regional "stocking dealer" thing? My impression from my time in Newfoundland was that Canada is way stricter on stocking agreements than the US. I had times when I tried to order music gear from just a regular shop (not even a distributor) only to be told that by policy they can only sell in provinces X and Y, and if I'm in Z I need to call a different store.
Same deal where I got to hear a rant from a music shop owner, about how another dealer in the province had started carrying X brand guitars. The dealer was adamant that this was "unfair" and that he should carry brand X, the other guy brand Y, and that way they wouldn't have to compete with each other.
Is it more of that, or is it actually Case themselves being silly?
