Face/Off - fullauto gun

Towards the end of Face/Off, there is a scene where the bad guy gets in a shootout at the church/funeral home. Towards the end of this shootout he pulls out a fullauto pistol. I slowed the movie down and it does NOT appear to be a Glock 18c. The frame looks like a 92FS, but the slide and barrel look quite different.
Any ideas? I am unable to capture a freeze frame of this particular gun in action. Maybe someone else here has the capablity to show post this gun here?

I bet it is the same prop gun from Broken Arrow

And according to most rumors, there are only two transferrable 93Rs in the United States. :(

Hmmmm.....
Try pausing the movie right when he is aiming the gun in the direction of the camera. The slide does not look like that. That slide looks pretty much like a 92FS. The lines of the slide are totally different on the Face/Off gun.

He's just pulling the trigger REALLY fast...
That, or he messed with the sear. He IS a bad guy, after all... ;)

They may have had to use a modified 92FS slide to get the gun to function with blanks.

I didn't see that movie, but today most movie guns are non-firing dummies, with the flash and the noise inserted during the editing. So the "gun" can be anything anyone wants it to be, hindered only by imagination and someone's ability to work with wood or plastic.
The use of blanks has pretty well gone by the boards since a couple of deaths on movie sets from idiots firing blanks at themselves or others. Insurance skyrockets if blanks are used, and no director will take a chance on the loss of a big box office star or a multi-million dollar lawsuit for the sake of "realism".
BTW, the work is done the same way the "light sabers" were put into Star Wars; the actors held nothing but the handles - the light and clanging sounds were added later.

The machine pistol that Travolta used in Face/Off was a APS (Automatic Pistol Stechkin).

I went to the Oshkosh airshow in 2001 and they had a Jeep there with a replica 30 cal browning on it that "fired" using propane to move the action and create the muzzle flash. It was pretty cool and even sounded fairly accurate. I think he said it cost him about $3000.
From what I understand a lot of prop guns are going this route for insurance purposes and to make the fireballs convincing without a lot of post-production time.

You guys are gonna force me to dig the move out and watch it again! Well, I like it, so any excuse to drool over the twin gold 1911s is fine. I remember the 93R in Broken Arrow, but can't remember the gun at the end of Face/Off.

Yep, thats the gun. 9mm Stechkin Full Auto. Never even heard of that gun before, but that is definately the one in Face/Off during the church/funeral scene in question.

Speaking of gold 1911s, I believe Cabelas in Minnesota has one of them for sale. It's like $3k. Search their website...

Wow, that is a very interesting link. Seems like the Dragons on the grips are not as bright/bold as they appeared in the movie. Great gun.

The question here is, would you fire the thing if you owned it?

October 21, 2003, 10:30 AM
Nope, unless it already shows signs of previous shots fired. Even then, I would rarely, if ever fire it.
Roz

Sounds like it is defeating the purpose of owning it. No use in having a pistol you won't fire.

That is deifnately the gun. Wonder how many of these are in the US? Or was the one in Face/Off just a fake prop gun?

Springfield 1911 "Face Off" .45ACP. Spring field Armory designed a series of 1911's for the Paramount picture "Face Off". There were four handguns made. Two were used in the shooting of the picture. Springfield Armory used the other two as a promotion. This pistol retains the factory letters telling of the promotion and the arrangement between Paramount and Springfield. Gold enhances the frame and the slide. Compensated barrel. There are two sets of grips. A replicated set, similar to the originals used in the picture. The other set are the originals from the custom shop. This gun is as new with case.
Price: $2,195

So is this gun electroplated or what? I dont see how you would get a gold finish to a gun that would handle any sort or wear...but its probably not meant to be shot. It sure does bring out the "pimp" in a .45...

Hi, Black Snowman and guys,
Propane guns have been around a while; the army had a machinegun simulator at least as early as the 1950's, but of course it didn't look like a machinegun (more like a small BBQ grille). The movies did use them some, but there is a fire hazard as well as the danger of having propane tanks around.
With the ability of the digital editing software to "follow" a muzzle and put in the flashes ("you want green, we give you green"), there is no need for any real flash from the "gun".

Right on, Roz. Having guns you can't shoot is like being married to Miss America and having seperate bedrooms. Why bother?
