.38 colt lightning problem

Just had a friend give me an 1877 .38 colt lightning. Here is my problem. It had a broken trigger spring which I replaced and cleaned things up a bit. The sear does not engage the hammer, thus no safety cock, half cock, etc...
I have since taken her apart again to investigate, but to no avail. No part seems excessively worn, in fact there is very little wear at all and I am 95% sure I reassembled correctly. Any suggestions? I don't want to buy alot of parts, but will to get her in tiptop shape. Please help!:banghead:
