Ok Guys,

What do you have in your home defense arsenal?

What is the primary scenario you plan for?

Please include both firearms and other equipment you keep ready (e.g., guns, dogs, security, etc.)?

Dog.

He a nice dog, 55 lbs of licking in the face and wagging tail (Labrador-Border Collie X). Even so, he WILL BARK if someone tries to break in. I doubt he'll bite though, which is fine with me since I don't want him in harms way anyway. A warning bark and I'll baricade myself in one room, call the police, and hope the police come before the BG comes in the room I'm in. If not, I have a Remington HD shotgun loaded with 02 birdshot (Fed Personal Defense Load), and a .357 magnum at the ready. The revolver is a backup, if the 12 gauge runs out of ammo, breaks a firing pin, or jams the .357 magnum is a last ditch gun.

Sorry, I don't have an arsenal.

It's a pet peeve of mine. An arsenal is a government facility where weapons are manufactured, stored, repaired and such.

I've got some long guns in the house, though. 12ga. with dove loads for indoor HD. Pheasant loads in wintertime. Slugs within reach. There have been home-invasion robberies here. Fewer since a local guy tagged a couple of BGs with his AR, though.

HUM... I see a lot of 12ga...I have been thinking on getting one, to add to my H&K45 and Mini 14. With so many, what is the best? If "best" is a good word...I want a shorter model, with the biggest capacity? Any ideas?

Trust me...
When I tell you to stay off the black tiles in the kitchen, you had better listen.:D

Suffice it to say that I have something semi-automatic that holds lots and lots of 123gr bullets, followed by something semi-automatic that holds lots and lots of 115gr JHP's.

Well, if they get past the turret mounted .50s on the roof and the infamous tactical kitty, they can meet my .38 special loaded with Federal Hyda-Shoks, followed by the USP9 and the SKS.

If I have about thirty minutes of warning so that I can get the darn thing loaded, I can turn the Navy Model 1851 loose on them:D

Live on a dead-end street in a decent neigborhood. Lighting outside at night including always-on and motion detectors. Cell phone and a roomate who had about the opposite schedule as I do so people are constantly comming and going.

If, in spite of all that, someone is stupid enough to pull something right next to my bed is a Bushmaster M17S with two 30 round mags full of 55gr HP Wolf ammo, dot sight and irons for back-up.

Gail's right eye is bad, so she has a post-ban AR shorty with EOTech Holosight, muzzle brake and A-1 length stock. Backup is a .410 single shot (until we get a 20 gauge auto) and a Taurus .357 snub.

I have a 20" pre-ban AR with stock sights and LOOONG stock for lanky bastards like me, a couple of 1911s and a Grendel .380. Backup is a Remington 870 with an 8 round tube and 20" barrel.

Morrigan is almost 6, but has a Crickett .22 and can use the Taurus 92 or a 10-22 with both hands and a rest.

Scenarios:

Someone comes in the back, face full of buckshot.

Someone knocks in the front door, torso full of 5.56.

Someone comes at us on the street or while traveling, as much .357, .45 or .380 as it takes to make them be a good boy.

TEOTWAWKI: We pack up and head for our buddy's nowhere places. Got two. Both VERY secure, remote enough not to be found, and accessible by road if you know how to drive.

Every vehicle has a fire extinguisher (with no trigger lock ;)) and first aid kit, house has a field surgical kit, the usual MREs, car bailout kits include sterno and cold weather gear, axes and saws, boltcutters. Home has dry and canned goods, fireplace, many acres of corn behind us (not ours, but good clear field of fire, and edible in emergency) and military Arctic gear and the new rucks.

And I make knives for a living. You better BELIEVE my 6 year old knows where the arteries are on the human thigh. We're all better than average with bayonet and butt, machete, sword and knife, kung fu or gun fu.

If I have to, I can forge barrels instead of blades.

No dogs. Noisy, crap in the yard and want walked and fed. A 12 gauge is easier.

Here in the dorms...

1) Armed security, actually somewhat trustworthy :)
2) Two sets of locked doors
3) 2nd floor room, stairs only accessible indoors
4) Thick concrete walls
5) Various knives hidden in various places, most are sharp :D
6) Cordless phone
7) A variety of exits (relatively confusing to an uninformed attacker)
8) And if all else fails, an ex-Marine roommate with a 4 D-cell Maglite and a KA-BAR

No firearms allowed on college capuses. :fire:

Early warning neighbor dog. Barks at anything on the street near his or our house from his fenced in front yard.
His "Stranger Approaching" barking sets off our five dogs; 3 Labs, 1 Rottie and 1 very old, deaf and mostly blind Viszla bird dog (he can still bark but it sounds like a braying donkey) at least four or five times a day. Once a night is a sure bet as well.
Early warning fleet of 3 caged Cockateils. Guranteed to start shrieking when someone enters house.
Two attack cats at foot of bed. They ought be good for something. Maybe if they were thrown at an intruder they'd latch aholt of something important. Probably not tho'.

Kinda remind you of the Bremen Musicians fable, neh?

If anyone gets through that alive...

Luckily for me I live off campus so I can have guns. I keep a Mossberg 500 loaded with #1 buck 'cruiser ready' between my bed and wall, hunting knife on the other side. Keep my bedroom door locked at night, lights on in the hallway. The side of the house has a light that I keep on, also. After I turn 21 I'll have a handgun of some sort too.

I need a light to put on the shotgun but alas paying for tuition has left me near broke heh. I'm thinking about making a mount for my mini maglite in the machine shop, though, along with a switch on the end of a curly cord from a cell phone charger.

Still need a few things, but as for now:

maverick88, loaded with 5 shots of stuff that really doesn't feel good when they hit, next to my bed

Ruger p89, 2 pre-ban clips, one with all hydrashoks, another with varying one hydrashok, 2 hollow point one hydrashok, etc...

Baseball bat next to bedroom door, cell phone, 2 pairs of police issue handcuffs.

And a multitude of little heavy things to throw at someone.

Ohh, and until I finish them, a case of full beer cans, those are normally reserved for after the event, but if i need something to throw, they're close by.

The clairvoyant Jeff Timm referred to me as:The incisive Happy Bob Wow- how did you know that I have really sharp knives, axes, bayonets, a good cleaver and the like all over my house? :D You're right; I like sharp things. I hope I didn't annoy people with my word-geek tendencies, though.

Tady45, I haven't seen a response to your question HUM... I see a lot of 12ga...I have been thinking on getting one, to add to my H&K45 and Mini 14. With so many, what is the best? If "best" is a good word...I want a shorter model, with the biggest capacity? Any ideas? The "Big Four" pumps are all very popular, and the Remington 870 and Mossy 590 series seem to be particular favorites. My SGs are all Remington autoloaders, but I feel the need for an 870. My life seems somehow incomplete without one.

Reliability and fit matter the most, IMO; there are a lot of folks here who know a lot more about choosing a HD SG than I do. I wanted to at least let you know that your Q had been read. If you search on "Home Defense Shotgun" here at THR, you'll have plenty of questions answered.

In my earlier post, I neglected to mention my four-legged alarm system: Sam the Wonder Dog sleeps under the bed. The cats are useless, but he's very good.

Drag about "no firearms on campus," dionysusigma, but a lot of people around the world have learned (the very short, very hard way) that a Marine with a Ka-Bar is not a good target.

At the moment, the only thing I have ammo for is the 12ga. I have ammo for the 8mm Mauser, but steel-cored 8mm Turkish moving @ 2600-2800fps is not a good BG stopper. It will put his car out of action if needbe though.

I also have the Beagle of Ultimate Cuteness. She can make people "coooo" and "awwww, wat a cooot beagawey poopy dawg....", holding them spell bound on command. She also has what is known as the Puppy Force™ :scrutiny: :scrutiny: , which allows her to augment gravity (20lb dog is suddenly 100lbs...), convince guests to give her cheese (ala ObiWan's "These arent the droids you are looking for..."), and oddly enough opening the fridge without touching it. I kid you not, I have personally witnessed it at least 4 times, as well has other family members. She also has the "Baying of Ultimate Terror™." Well, at least to the squirrels anyway. I think she could put these useful skills to use. It would be my luck though that she would give up some of the valueables for some good cheese or spam though.:uhoh:

On top of that, there is no place in the house that anyone can step without making a sound. I have tried the whole "Ninja" thing. Its impossible.

Colt Delta Elite 10mm on my side, Kimber .45 on the wife's side

3-D cell Maglite, Mini-maglite too

Cordless (landline) phone + cell phone

Doors are all on the far end of the house. Potential bad thing, though, when the baby arrives-baby's room will be between me and any bad guy. But any bad guy will not want to be between the naked man with the shotgun and his kid.

Equipment wish list:

Surefire foregrip for the shotgun
Surefire light for the Kimber
Surefire light for my USP Tactical (on the grounds that 12+1 .45 is better than 8+1 10mm)

And once the baby arrives, the house will have strategically deployed toys throughout. :p

If they get past those, I fix the bayonet on my Mosin-Nagant and teach them about what makes the green grass grow. Hmm, I'm thinking a weapon with a bayonet would scare someone enough to turn and run. If that doesn't do it by itself it might help to have the person holding it to be screaming the answers to the following questions until his eyes bulge out:

"What makes the grass grow"
"What makes the flowers grow"
and "What is the spirit of the bayonet"

The answers at Ft. Jackson in late '89 and early '90 were: "Blood, blood, blood makes the grass grow", "Guts, guts, guts make the flowers grow", and "To kill, to kill, to kill without mercy" screamed at the top of your lungs.

Seriously now, my "arsenal" is:
-several knives (3 defensive folders, an outdoor type folder and a bowie knife)
-a 3 D cell Maglite (blunt force weapon if needed)
-2 canisters of pepper spray
-one or two of several guns are loaded and ready (the Taurus 85 is almost always one of them, and often/usually on my person when in the house)
-an SKS, unloaded but with 10-20 loaded stripper clips nearby (for the totally unexpected).

Guns that are usually in the rotation:
-Colt Police Posititive Special in .38spl. It is reliable, reasonably accurate and it was cheap so if taken as evidence if used in a self defense shooting I won't be out much if it doesn't come back or if it gets messed up. This is used (due to not being much of a loss) about 80-90% of the time.
-S&W 65LS (usually loaded with +Ps). I love this gun.
-Charles Daly 1911
-CZ 75B
-very rarely my Bersa Thunder .380 is in the Taurus' place. It is a good gun, it is accurate, it is reliable, but I just like the snub better (wow, I never thought I would have said something like that- especially after my Taurus 605 which was too heavy and no fun to shoot).

I no longer use my S&W 586 or 19 for HD use. Good guns, but I'd hate to lose them if collected as evidence and then lost or broken (of course several of my guns that I use I'd hate to lose just as much- esp. the 65LS, CZ and Daly).

Soon to come:
Either a shotgun, .223 carbine (Mini-14 most likely), or .357 or .44mag lever carbine to take the place of the SKS. I need a long gun that is more suited to the more probable home defense situations.

I am not about staging weapons around the house. I don't want to help arm any intruders after all. I guess I am getting complacent out here in suburbia.

Anyway, back to the topic:

1. I have a little anklebiter. Her job is to wake me up.

2. I keep a 20ga Win 1300 with 5 rounds, a 625 with 12 rounds and a 442 with 10 rounds.

3. My wife gets the 625 and calls the cops. I'll get the boomstick and the 442. We'll announce the fact that we are ready and have called the cops to our guests (by yelling I guess). Then we'll cover the bedroom door. No confrontations for me. I am in Kalifornia.

4. Hope that nobody tries to enter the bedroom. For their sake.

Molly, my brothers dog, is a 75 lb. Black Labrador who sharpens her teeth daily. Her bark rattles your guts. Got a set of 4 First Alert alarms on sale somewhere for $9.99...goodness sakes they are annoyingly loud!

25 pounds of attack Lhasa Apso...he is absolutely fearless and HATES strangers.

Various firearms about the residence...gotta love that empty nest!

Lights, K Bar, phones, armed wife.....yep.

Our local PD has 10 officers + 4 in the SO...I'm not counting on a lot of help in a hurry. A guy ought to be able to look out for himself inside his own home.

I live in a bad area of town.
Wife is handicapped--bed or wheelchair.
Most guns are in the safe--I don't need an intruder finding one.
Wife is always armed with a S&W 38 Sp when I'm gone.
When I'm home--Mossberg 500 12ga by my bed and a handgun is within my reach or on my person at all times. I'm partial to 9mm's
Back yard has a high fence and good lighting. Front yard --good lighting and a clear view.
I've rigged my back porch door with my own devised locking system which is hard to figure out if you don't know how it works. If someone tries to get in they will have to make a lot of noise.
I have also been collecting knives for years.
I was born and raised in Camden NJ--so my street sense and ability to handle bad situations is quite good or nasty depending on how you look at it.( a clean fight is one where you've taken a shower before you hit the SOB with everything you've got --LOL).
Also something else which I feel is real important--I know all of my good neighbors. We watch out for each other. The bad neighbors and gang bangers know me just well enough not to mess with me --my wife--my property or my good neighbors.
I've been in this house since 1983 and it's worked so far.Other than some childish type stuff--never had a major problem.
I've had to call LE many times and the reponse time here is real good. That is somewhat comforting but not something I will rely on. I believe in having all my bases covered.

i have a homemade phone+laptop rig censer on my front and back door. the laptop has video. so i know when someone is here. i personally would rather detain someone than kill in self defense. i have many knives, a sword. 2 fully auto paintball guns, with easy power-adjusters, for either distraction or just to push someone out with an endless barrage. and they're colored and easy to spot driving away. i have a sword: 20lbs, 4+1/2 feet long, sharpened. i'm making another sword. forged armor, thick enough to stop a shotgun. shields; also thick. a spear, several wood poles. my parents have a .22 rifle in their closet, and a .22 pistol, plenty of ammo. i don't have any guns, except a BB gun. i have a longbow and a hunting bow, with ~10 arrows apiece. 10 with razors 10 not. if needed, we have bolt-locks on all inside doors, which i would think the attackers would rather use to hide from us... *evil* oh, i almost forgot my huge Akita dog. she's beautiful, i have no idea of her weight, she's twice as big as me, though. you don't want to wake her up. ever.

I guess it would go in this order:
1) Grab Glock 20
2) Grab Bushmaster E2S M4A3
3) Grab the level III vest and strap it on right quick
4) Get out of quick-peek or cut-the-pie view
5) Dial 911 and tell them to rush the call
6) Key up on the radio and tell them again, because of the time-lapse delay between call-ins and dispatch
7) Stand by and take appropriate action(s)

:)

The 870, G26, 92G and Sigma .40 would be in other places in the residence, so I wouldn't be able to get to them as fast as what I mentioned...lol

First is the early warning radar supplied by 4 Chocolate Labs. They feel the need to tell me any and every movement that occurs outside of and near the house. Once I'm up and ready there is a XD45 in the nightstand and a Mossberg 590 close by.

Outdoor security lighting system - no light bulbs.
Excellent security system - unmonitored and turned off.
No dogs or other animals that might warn of intruders.
Signs warning intruders that "the homeowner is armed and nothing is worth risking their life for inside" at all entrances.
The necessary equipment to authenticate the signs validity.
The necessary ammunition to keep certain equipment loaded.
The necessary mindset to use the equipment when appropriate.
Equipment includes, but is not limited to: .223, .45 and 12 gauge.
A telephone. For what, I don't know.

I have a hive of miniature dachshunds. As few invaders bother to armor their ankles, these have a nice distracting effect along with their really annoying sonorous bark. Any invaders who subsequently look up from their bloody ankles after dispatching my freak canine german eugenics experiments will then discover the business end of german hammer-forged engineering. And God help any commissioned functionary dressed in a tactical badger uniform. ;-)

In our next lesson we'll discuss escape tunnels and dual-species canned survival rations...
