Range results for today

hey....decided to get out of the house and go do target practice today. I went to a local conservation area; the environment was optimal, sunny, no strong breezes, no clouds, mild temperatures in the mid 70's. This paper was taken on my 2nd clip, 3 shot groups at 100 yds, iron sights. The target is 8 1/2 by 11, w/ 3 x 4 neon sticker thrown on. Bushmaster AR15, Hbar, full length. The 'cloverleaf' in the middle was my last set of three in the clip. I'd have liked to have gotten that result every time, lol...
The lack of consistency is bugging me today. I shot with my elbow propped on the bench, as I did not have any sort of benchrest to lay the barrel onto. My overall groups are considerably tighter when i have a rest, but I'm wondering how to get a more accurate result without using anything more than the bare minimum. Is a bipod too phoo-phoo to use? Or should I just bring a rest every time I shoot?
*sigh*
guess a bad day shooting is better than no shooting, lol...

p.s. and yes, the range doofi were out in force.

A day shooting is a fun day.

Gonna send this over to Rifle.

Vasilia, nice cloverleaf!

My advice is, do not use a rest every time you shoot. Shoot in different positions, under different circumstances. It will make you a better shooter.

In my opinion, the place for bench-rest shooting is to evaluate the performance of a rifle or a particular load. The fun part of shooting is real world conditions and positions.

In other words--bench resting shows what the rifle can do; plinking shows what you can do.

Bipods are cool, too. Varmit hunters use them a lot. I prefer to do my varmit hunting from a seated position. I get better at it over time.

Agree with Dave.
Position shooting....
Offhand, kneeling, sitting and prone.

And using makeshift rests...
Stick, tree, etc

Makes for a better all round shooter.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I do practice in more than one position - I agree that it does make one a better shooter. Besides, if I have to shoot defensively, am I going to get a nice concrete bench & a rest & pretty neon colored targets? I wish I could find a place that would let me shoot while on the move, had made me think tactically. I had thought of paintballing, but I hear that can cause bad habits, LOL...

I sat down and gave some thought to as to exactly what was I doing at the time during the last three shot group that cloverleafed so nicely...then I realized I had OPENED BOTH EYES in sighting....
ah. silly rabbit.
