txman321 June 4, 2009, 04:30 PM I have a question for yall, Im possibly going hog hunting next week with my neighbor we are going to his lease to set up feeders and if we see any hogs are are going to take them, I was wondering which rifle I should use?
.270 winchester with federal 150 grain round nosed bullets
or
.30-06 with federal premium 165 grain boat tail soft point
Those are the only bullets i have atm for those two rifles which would be better?

xmanpike June 4, 2009, 04:39 PM Either gun is more than enough for even the bigger hogs. Good luck, let us know how you do!
Wolfebyte June 4, 2009, 05:03 PM most fun I had hog hunting was done with a 7.62x39mm.
the 2 calibers you are opting for are plenty of firepower.
right now it depends on which caliber can you quickly resupply your stock with?
BFE June 4, 2009, 05:29 PM Either gun will work fine, shoot em in the head behind the eye side view and all the meat is great.
Nathanael_Greene June 4, 2009, 10:20 PM Either rifle will knock 'em down.
In this warm weather, though, be sure to get that meat cooled down in a hurry.

Interesting, you asked what rifle to use and then gave us ammo choices, not rifle choices. What are the rifles you may be shooting? Optics? What sort of terrain and habitat will you be in?
txman321 June 4, 2009, 11:43 PM the .270 is a Mossberg 100 atr with a 3x9 scope that came with it, and the .30-06 is a savage 110 older model with a 4x12 bushnell sportview scope and its going to be on my neighbors deer lease i think he said almost every shot is under 150 yards
txman321 June 5, 2009, 12:21 AM the .270 bullets i have are the Federal power-shok 150 grain np bullets , will those work on hog?
Cpt. America June 5, 2009, 12:24 AM Just take a knife:evil:.
txman321 June 5, 2009, 12:30 AM haha im not that crazy (yet) to try and hunt one with a knife, id rather sit up in the blind and pick em off with my rifle
txman321 June 5, 2009, 01:04 AM i also have a 12 ga mossberg 500, If i load it up with buckshot/slugs will that work as a backup incase i come across a hog that is pissed off and i didnt mean to get that close
41 Mag June 5, 2009, 05:27 AM Either rifle is good, take the one you shoot the best. Take your time on your shot and don't yank the trigger with excitement. You will be fine. As mentioned aim for the head just below the ear or low and tight in behind the shoulder, their lungs and heart are more forward than a deer or other critter.

Sounds like your excited and ready to have a great time. Good luck, watch those snakes as well.
Double Naught Spy June 5, 2009, 06:58 AM Given that the rifles are fairly comparable, I would go with the .30-06.
