Firefighter Convicted In Worker Comp Scam
October 18, 2003
A ballet dancer turned firefighter has been convicted of stealing nearly $17,000 in workers' compensation while he was working in a city firehouse.
Curtis Crowe, 40, of the Bronx, pleaded guilty to two counts of grand larceny and a count of insurance fraud over his double-dipping between February and April 2000, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said Friday.
Acting State Supreme Court Justice Steven Barrett set sentencing date for Jan. 12. Crowe faces up to seven years in prison.
Johnson said the judge ordered Crowe to make full restitution and indicated that Crowe would be given a conditional discharge at sentencing.
Officials say Crowe was performing with a touring ballet troupe in Omaha, Neb., when he was injured in a December 1999 fall. Two months later, he was sworn in as a firefighter. He has been suspended without pay.
While working for the department, he collected 10 checks from the Hartford Insurance Co. for workers' compensation totaling $4,666. On his New York application, Crowe stated that he had no injury that would prevent him from working as a firefighter.
That investigation uncovered a second theft, in which Crowe stole $12,000 from the City Workers' Compensation Fund after claiming he was partially and permanently disabled from his job as a city lifeguard in 1992, Johnson said. When Crowe joined the Fire Department in February 2000, he passed a physical exam that indicated he was fit for duty.
