What bullet weight do you use in 45ACP for IDPA matches?

I like the 200 gr SWC. They drop a steel plate with no problem.

and do you carry the same weight bullet when off the range? If so, what are you shooting/carrying competition/off range?

I wouldn't ask .. but it is IDPA ..with the emphasis on the "D"

My handload is a 200 grain lead SWC over 4.8 grains of Winchester 231. Makes power factor. Shoots to same point of aim as my standard carry load. In fact I have often carried my lswc IDPA handloads instead of expensive factory defensive ammo. Haven't lost any sleep about it yet. :)

I use a 205 gr. Bear Creek moly coated lead RNFP. Works well in both my 1911s, my CZ 97 and will also do well in my soon to be picked up 625.
Hmmm, I see a pattern forming here...

200 grain lead semi-wadcutter.

230 grain cast LRN on top of 4.8 grains of 700X. Velocity is around 840 ft/sec out of my Les Baer Premier II, and it's reliable. (Of course, everything is reliable in that pistol.) Pretty much duplicates GI hardball, but with a cheaper cast bullet.

And IMHO the press about .45 hardball being a hard kicker is BUNK.

Pretty much what I've been shooting as well. 230gr FMJ, 5.5gr W231, Federal primers & mixed brass.

I'm starting to lean towards a 200 gr bullet for flatter shooting targets at longer ranges might be an advantage. Recoil isn't a problem in the 45. For match competition quick recovery and flatter trajectory is an advantage.

Just picked up a Les Baer PII only had 100 rounds thru it. A very nice weapon.

Did you mean 5.8 grains? I'm shooting 5.5 gr and at 78 degrees out of a Kimber with a Commander length barrel I clocked at 820 fps, which is just shy of a 165 PF-- need to get to 825 PF with a 200 gr bullet.

That's odd too; higher weight and jacketed.

What kind/hardness bullets & barrel length are your guys using?

225gr flat-nose (truncated cone) hard cast bullet over 6.9gr of Power Pistol. 840fps from a Commander length gun. I use this load for all my 45ACP needs. IPSC/IDPA, pin shooting etc. Even as a substitute for hardball when hiking in the woods.

Yep 5.7 W231.

5.5 was a typo. These loads are hot comming out of a Commander. Plenty of muzzle flash.

Use 230 RN in 1911 Auto and 200 in Revolver S&W 625....

InTheBlack,

That is correct, check out this thread for details of when I was playing around with the load: www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37397

At 4.8 w231 I get 830-840 FPS out of a 5 inch Kimber. Last chronoed at about 4,000 or so feet above sea level. 65 degrees.

Kinda funny, after that thread I got a little scared I wouldn't make the power factor, so my load for the state match was 5.2 grains and I got 930 fps for a 186 power factor. The unfortunate side effect of this was that my POI changed and my rounds hit lower than expected. (well that is my excuse for the missed head shots and the one dead hostage target anyway) :p

PMC ball, or 230 gr LRN equivalent. Carry is 230gr +P's.

230 FMJ Remington
230 Fed Hydra shock (really makes you mad when you miss with expensive ammo)
