Remington made several small pistols that could be called "derringers". The best known, and the only one to come anywhere near that number, is the double (over and under) derringer in .41 rimfire caliber.

That 175xxx is the highest number I have seen; most books say only 150,000 were made.

I wondered too, because they were numbered in batches, not consecutively.

Once during my misspent youth during the darkest of the dark ages, I proudly showed an advanced Remington collector that I had an O/U derringer with the serial number 35. He smiled and produced two others with the same number.

Fuff I once had a guy make a huge deal that he had number 3--whoopity doo was my response since I've seen multiple #1's

I've seen those too... :o But that incident I mentioned sure took the wind out of a teen-kid's sails... :scrutiny: :D

If the frame hinge is not cracked, you are lucky, as so many are. Remington made those frames out of cast iron, not steel, and the hinge breaks routinely in spite of the cartridge being about as low pressure as you can get.

Jim of course you know the hinge breaks because people didn't baby the action open but let it slam over center-or worse!

I know, but Remington could have beefed them up and never did. Maybe they figured that a broken hinge meant selling another gun.

In any case, that gawdawful spring would have kept me from carrying one.
