I dont want to spend to much on a shotgun. But I was at some stores and saw some mossberg's 12g for around $210 are these anygood? I know they are cheap but are they good? I saw a review on this remmiton wingmanster 870 and heard those are there top sellers :D I think they are around $300 though. So my question is, would it be better to pay $100 more for the remmiton? or just get the mossbergs for $210-220 range:confused:

Edited I think the $200's are 500 Fields's the name of type. But I dont like the lenth of the barrel its to long for HD...

Remington 870, Mossbergs (The 500 is a 20 gauge, other models hae 12 gauge) and a few other guns come to mind for HD.

Go to a gun shop. One with many shotguns. Pick out a pile of short shotguns. Nothing longer than a 24 inch barrel.

Go through that pile until you find a few that fits you and you like.

Then compare the pricing.

That is just a start of your journey.

Spouse's moss was about 270 out the door. My Marine Magnum 870 was 640 out the door. Both guns have recieved another few dollars in improvements like slings and such until they are good enough and shoot well.

Just the other day I spotted another Marine Mag at 650. I might just get it. If one is good, why not two? It's a slippery slope.

Then again throw in a S&W Handgun for about 650 plus 140 in accessories for it.

Ammo is extra and range fees as well.

Keep in mind that the Mossbergs have slug barrels AND Rifled barrels AND smooth barrels that you can get in 18 inch length for your specific wants and ammuntion you intend to shoot. It can be very easy to swap a barrel and turn that long mossy into a nice little house cleaner.

Uh, very agile protector of house and home.. ahem yep... I tend to point you towards the moss. Once you pick one up you will see why I like em, they are cute, light and cuddly. Easy to feed, shoot and clean.

The remmie is a bit of a brute. But then again we aint shopping for lapdogs.

My local place sells the Maverick 88's for $199. It would make a great defense shotgun for little $$$. Personally I'm a fan of buying used, if you look around you can sommetimes find a nice 870, 590...etc for little more than that Maverick.

The Mossberg 500 is available in 12 ga, 20 ga, .410, and as a .50 caliber muzzle loader.

that you can get in 18 inch length18 1/2" to be more exact.

mavericks,remmys,chinese copie 870, they"ll all serve you well,me i like my 149.00 memphis pd winchester 1200 short riot,12 of em straight out of a box/crate,old guns,but cleaned up nice,actions slick and wood cleaned up perdy.they sold quick..

This topic is covered at least once a week on this forum, or so it would seem. :rolleyes: Regardless, for HD, stick with a barrel 20" or less. Personally, I like Mossbergs and tend to spend my money on the 590 variants vs. the 500. Remingtons are ok, but I dont see any real advantage here (well, when speaking of current gen models anyway). Keep in mind, as you may be well aware of, the Mossbergs have a different "setup" (elevator function and safety location, for instance) which some prefer, some dont...particularly when HD is of concern. I find the Mossbergs setup to be a bit better when it comes to "human engineering." Best thing though, try them all out.

Whether Remington or Mossberg (heck, maybe even a good Benelli Nova/SuperNova if you can find one for sub-$300), you shouldnt have to worry too much about ending up on the wrong end of things if the weapon is in good condition to begin with...particularly for $300 or less.

i really can't add much to what has already been said in the way of what is a good brand/model of HD shotgun. Remmington, Mossberg, etc. just pick one that feels right and it should provide lifetime service for you provided you maintain it at least minimally.

i do want to add two things though:

#1 parts availability on mossberg and remmington are easy to find.

#2 don't get the ultimate HD shotgun and think that you are covered by simply having it around. USE IT AND PRACTICE WITH IT. there are no accescories that compensate for training and experience.
