is it possible to change my front sight post to a gas block with rail for flip up sights on my double star m4/ar 15?

i want to add optics but i feel the sight post will ruin the point of what i want as i want to have an eohtech with a 3x magnifier and it seems that it wouldn't work with that sight post on.

all the brownell's and other tutorials show the flash hider or muzzle breaks being taken off.

apparently the guy at the gun store failed to mention the rifle had a permanent muzzle break. if not what are my options on getting this problem fixed. this is my first fire arm i have bought and i obviously done into quick on this without proper research. i wanted to get one to shoot while i could with the ban scare going on. and they wouldn't order the one i asked them to order for me from bushmaster so i opted for this double star "star 15" as a 2nd option for my budget. the manual shows a disassembly schematic of the rifle with the muzzle break off but after a few min of trying with a cloth and wrench i couldnt get it off fear of damage. so i checked the site and it said the break was permanently attached. which pissed me off over the false advertisement in the manual. i will definitely not be recommending them to anyone who wants to make a tactical carbine out of it that isnt willing to mount optics to their carry handle if what i want cant be achieved without gun smithing,

if its not possible to change it with the fixed barrel shroud what would you guys or girls recommend that wouldn't break the bank, because im not really eager to dish out for a new upper. if worse comes to worse i will. but the barrels i see online are all sold out from my searches.

so how would i go about fixing this. ive saw ppl getting a gun smith to do it and many weren't pleased with the results of the ascetics.

here is the gun. its well made and i love it and its a beautiful rifle but i just dont like that they failed to put that in their manual after showing it off of the gun..

The front sight post will not make any difference...since your focus is on the target with an EO Tech and not the sight it will be visible but in no way hurt the ability to shoot. Our duty carbines are configured that way and work fine.

As far as the perm muzzle device it needs to be cut off if you want to remove it but be careful because once you do that your 14.5 inch carbine just became an SBR and if assembled is illegal without a tax stamp

cant remember who makes a two piece gas block but they are available. take off your hand guard and push out the tube pin. very carefully and slowly taking your time with a dremil tool cut off your old front sight. install your new gas block and now your a gunsmith :D

yankee hill (YHM) makes a nice one for about 49.50 plus shipping.

The only way to remove it is as described already; either grind off the weld holding the permanent muzzle device on (and I would give this to a gunsmith who can then replace the muzzle device lest you fall afoul of the SBR regs) , or grind off the FSB.

It's your call, but I wouldn't do it.

None of the flip-up FSBs are as solid and as fail-proof as the standard pinned unit. Since the pinned unit will not cause an issue with optics (1x CQB optics should be set to cowitness on the front sight and you'll not see the FSB through a magnified optic), I would be very happy leaving it in place, were I you...

unless you specifically asked the shop guy if it could come off and he told you wrong, I do not see how that is his fault. By law, barrels that are less than 16 inches without the hider must have it permanently affixed. That is a little nuance that not everyone might know. I have a buddy who is a federal firearms instructor and I had to convince him it was illegal for him to put a 14.5 inch barrel on his personal CAR15 without the right paperwork. If the barrel is a true 16 incher then it can be kept on with just the crush washers.

The schematic only shows the parts, not the techniques on how they go together, if you look at an HK schematic, there are parts shown seperate that in life are welded on. Torqueing with a wrench and a towel like you did probably would not have gotten even a non permanent flash hider off anyway. Tightness varies by manufacturer, but wrenching the flash hider hard enough to take it off can damage things unless you had a barrel vise or action block. And besides a lot of those schematics are generic, and are probably based off the military diagram. A military M4 barrel would not be soldered.

I do commiserate though, I really wanted to put a bayonet lug sight on my Colt ten years ago but gave up when I realized what a pain it would be and how little I would use a bayonet.

I would leave it on, the front sight can be annoying with some scopes, but in actual shooting, you usually do not notice it, and with a red dot site, it is a desireable thing.
