My grandfather just gave me somewhere around 2 thousand shotgun hulls. but most of them are really dusty and dirty. is it necessary to clean them up before I use them? Is there a good way to clean them?

any input or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Go the the local sporting clays or skeet range and ask to pick up hulls. This will allow you to have current hulls.

Cleaning old hulls can be a PITA.

I have cleaned hulls with dish washing detergent and water. Rise them throughly and dry in the sun; or as CajunCB suggested, scrounge once fired ones from a trap or skeet range. :)

do i even need to clean them? could i maybe just hose them off and shake them out to get the loose stuff off?

there are quite a few nice ones, but there is a box of about 1000 old dirty ones.. i might just get rid of most of those, I think i even saw a few paper/cardboard ones.

When I was in the Army, and really poor, I used to collect used hulls out of the trash can at the skeet range.
Followed by a stop at the Laundromat on the way home.
Toss them in the washing machine with a half cup of soap and a quarter.

Old AA's come out looking like new!

Not recommended for fiber base-wad hulls though.
Or, your wifes new $1000 Kenmore washer.

I would just blow the dust off and go.

Question is, are they one or two types, or a bunch of different kinds. Not all hulls are a like. Old AA's keep, **** can the rest and start fresh.

Gun clubs as was stated earlier is where you can get all the hulls you want.
