Gus turns 21 on the 21st!
Trisha
October 20, 2003, 11:55 AM
OK, THR's, if each of us could give Gus two firearms for her 21st birthday, what would they be, and why? A make-believe birthday bash is way better than nothing!
My choices:
A pre-ban, selective-fire, supressed HK PDW
A Tibbets customized, fully-engraved Delta Elite
Why? The PDW scores high on the WOW factor at any range. Having had one opportunity to shoot it, supressed, I almost threw myself heavily into debt - it was so much fun!
The threads that showed me how lovely the Tibbets Custom Shop makes the Delta Elite brought me to realize that such a work of art could only be improved if it was lovingly engraved - the perfect gift.
Happy birthday, Gus!

Hmm.... Well who is Gus? And why should I give him two firearms for his birthday?
If I did though, they would be a Sig p239 in .357 sig for concealed carry and a Benelli M-1 Tactical for home defense.
Practical in every way!

Gus is also standing at the mailbox waiting to mail CCW papers on B-Day too. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say daddy is gonna cave in and give Gus his Glock she wants. CCW is thus covered ( I Hope)
She needs a classic blue and wood old ( pre '82) LNIB model 19 with a set of custom wood grips.
Gotta have a shotgun, lets do A Citori Grand Lightening in 28 ga.

A brace of 4" Diamondbacks, one in .22 LR and the other a 38 Special. Maybe she won't appreciate them now, but she would later as she grows into refinement.

Thanks guys and gals. :D I am VERY excited about turning 21. I am hopefully going to try out some more of daddy's guns to see which I like best. I would love to carry the glock, but it's hard to conceal. With winter coming though it would be easier. We'll just wait and see.

nonsense! you can conceal the glock, or any other fullsized handgun, easily! simply talk your dad into helping you buy a new wardrobe that is conducive to concealing the gun you wish to carry.

Glock 19? Hmm...
Since y'all have covered that, I'd get her a Glock 18 (or converted Glock 17)
And a .454 for some oomph :p
Dr.Rob
October 20, 2003, 03:14 PM
Hmmm.
I think I'd opt to get Gus two pretty ponies.
A full sized Colt government model .45, for winter and or belt wear. And a nice detective special .38 for more discreet carry. Of course, a 380 Government model wouldn't be out of the question.
We can get em in blue or stainless or even parkerized if they have to have that tacticool Glock baked on finish.
Wait.. does Gus like rifles too?

I have this feeling Perfessr is gonna regret ever letting Gus read THR in the first place. :)
Gus is a hit with the Forum
Gus wants daddy's gun ( crinkle...I think I hear him wrapping it now).
He is reading this thread...and wondering do I push for elopement and save my guns...or will that mean I'll have to buy the SIL guns too...
Plus, oh my- these guys are really giving her expensive idea for a want list for a certain holiday coming up.

Skunk-Yes I am engaged. :)
Dr. Rob-Yes I like rifles. I get a kick out of daddy's lever action and had lots of fun shooting Sodapop's "evil black rifles" at the shoot the other month.
I like having my b-day semi close to Christmas. Cause then what I don't get for my b-day I ask for for Christmas.
I think daddy like that I get on here. That way y'all can educate me about guns and he doesn't have to do it all. :neener:

I have this mental image of THR gathering seated on the bride's side. "Man, that's the most heavily armed wedding party I've ever seen."
And picture the reption & gift opening. "Look honey, another case of ammo! Aaahhhh!! It's an all-black uber-tactical wardrobe! Skunky, you shouldn't have!!"

21st eh?
I'm tempted to say a Glock 21 because I have yet to meet a woman who having shot it, doesn't love it, even if its kinda on the large size.... but, going for a CCW theme and leaving it to b-day presents only (we'll deal with wedding registration type gifts for another day, another thread and include Gg...you poor poor young man... I hope you reload or learn to), I'd have to go with a Colt Combat Commander, stainless, worked over by Terry Tussey, lightly and tastefully engraved as my first choice.
In the long gun category, I'd keep it to a basic USGI Carbine, M1, .30 cal. as its fun, works for light hunting and plinking and can be used to defend hearth and home as need be. Maybe throw in a thousand rds with 2-3, 30 rd. mags.
Adios

Congrats . . . 21 on the 21st. You share the same birthday as luminaries such as Carrie Fisher, Dizzy Gillespie, Alfred Nobel, and HankB.
On my 21st, I took a deer with a .357. But at that time, you weren't even a gleam in your daddy's eye.
So . . . I'd suggest a .357 of some type, like a pre-sellout M686.

Gus' Guy, if you really want to be tactically logistical get something with compatible magazines, like a Glock 34 or something. I'm sure she could use drop-free 15-rounders for the Glock but if the wedding isn't until next year, you may want to wait until after the ban sunset.
ps you need a pair of 5.11s ;)

Gus and Gus' guy...
Happy B'day baby girl.
Jon, welcome to THR and the wonderful world of shooting.
At our Wedding last New Year's Eve, when the Judge got to the part about anyone objecting, I giggled, b/c my groom had unbuttoned his coat and was ready to draw on anyone foolish enought to object. Judge couldn't see what groom was doing , but we told him later.
We also took a pic of the "Pistol Packin Wedding Party"
My Groom had on his "Weddings and Funerals" Colt .45 Beautiful engraving all over.
Best Man/Groom's younger son, Had Ivory gripped Colt .45
Groom's Older son had gold Cup
Judge had "Wedding and Funeral Pistol and swept robe aside so you could see it in pic.
Groom's brother also in pic, but I can't recall his pistol.
I had a P32 in the bodice of my Renaisance style dress.
It's a really cool pic and I got the idea from some friends of ours. At their wedding all the groomsmen had fancy pistols and Bride raised her dress to show the pistol in her garter.
Just thought I'd share since you might like a similar pic at your wedding.
Anyways, Happy birthday and let us know when the wedding is.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone.

PS I think Jon and I may end up with a bigger knife/sword collection than a gun collection. Either way we will probably have some sort of collection when funds allow

*at the top of my lungs*
Here comes the bride!!!! Alll...
I really want one of those "I know I did something, but I'm trying to look innocent" smilies. I'd get a lot of miles out of that one...
But seriously you two. Congratulations on your engagement. Several people I know have gotten married recently so I've had the pleasure of seeing the blessings of marriage from fairly close. I hope God blesses your marriage as you get to know each other and start out on a life together.
Now, to keep this gun/knife related. Some thoughts.
Guns: There are several types of guns everyone should have. This varies with the person. I personally figure
A CCW gun (carry, duh): Glock, SIG, 1911
A .22 pistol (cheap fun): Browning Buckmark, Ruger
A good shotgun (clays, birds, home defense): Remington 870, Mossberg, Benelli
An evil black rifle (FUN, and pisses off the antis): AR15
A bolt action rifle (hunting): Remington 700 (.308 works awful well)
A good revolver and an American classic, a 1911, aren't bad categories either. So, you might want to look at what niches you'd like to fill and start with that. The CCW gun is probably a practical start, while if you don't hunt the bolt-action might not be.
For CCW, I love Glocks. Not pricey, light, simple. My Glock 23 is my magic sword. It's with me almost all the time. You shouldn't have much trouble concealing it. I always carry in an OWB Fobus paddle holster under a T-shirt with no trouble. I'm skinny, so I have lots of empty space to conceal in.
Swords: Collecting swords is a sophisticated hobby. Sort of like fine wines. And it's fun. It's even more fun if you have some expereince with swords. I appreciate my katana-style sword even more since I'm a kumdo student (like kendo, except Korean) and actually know how to use it. If you go the sword road, you might enjoy trying to find a local kendo schol or something to give you a little practical experience.
Knives: *looks at length of post* :uhoh: I'll keep it short. BENCHMADE. Just buy them. You'll thank me later. Quality, sharp, lifetime warranty, dead sexy. If you want a serious critique pull up whatever the latest "What knife should I get?" post in Non-firearms is and read my reply. Stryker, Ares, AFCK are favorites, but they're all good.
For fixed blade, Ka-Bar is a quality classic. SOG makes excellent knives, but they are more expensive. Knifecenter.com (www.knifecenter.com) has good prices on everything.
Hope I gave you a few good thoughts. Knives are a very practical, every day place to start. And they are cheaper. But since you only get married once, milk this and get some guns out of it. God bless.

Happy Birthday, Gus!
gharsh wrote that "turning the age of your date only happens once in a lifetime." When I lived in the midwest, they called that your "Golden Birthday." I spent mine (19 on the 19th, long ago) studying for a mean old exam. Getting your CCW paperwork in is MUCH better!Dodging guns might be a little harder than dodging raindrops. Ammo showers might be nice, though.
Welcome, Gus's Guy! You wrote earlier that I've turned in my paint brushes and drawing tablets for the highroad Don't have to do that; they're welcome here, too. :) You wrote that you don't have any guns (note the plural) yet. You will. Just be sure to budget some money for food along the way. :neener:
Gus, you'll get that Glock somehow, I bet. I'd add beautifully-blued old Detective Special and a Rock River match-grade AR, since you mentioned having tried EBRs and liking 'em.
Wedding present? Think "matching Pythons." The best man should carry a slung AR, btw. The rest of the wedding party can go wild with BBQ guns and fancy stuff. I can hear the minister saying, "If anyone present objects to this union ... well, I'm not sure that it's such a good idea to say much..." Sounds like kind of the reverse of a "shotgun wedding."
Have fun, you two. :D
And Happy Birthday, HankB!

I only remember this cuz it was right above the picture of the 8-year old girl with a 20" AR-15 and a beautific smile on her face. That cracked me up. If there is a reason that you didn't want this posted, just put up a note and I'll delete the post ASAP. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I was guesstimating your height based on the ratio of the gun to your arm length. (Arm length *2) + (around 1' for the torso) = height (since the distance from your head down to your toes is the same as the distance from fingertip to fingertip if you spread your arms straight out). I came up w/ a real rough estimate of about 5'3". Which isn't bad.
Thanks for satisfying my nerdy curiosity.

Happy Day, Gus!
Three pages and no one's mentioned the ever-popular HK P7M8?
How about:
a custom Mauser bolt gun in Gus' favorite tack drivin' caliber, and maybe a good Pennsylvania flinter? What's your take on smokepoles?
Wedding present?
a cased pair of caplock duelling pistols:neener:
Seriously, congratulations!

:)
Last night dad finally showed me how to field strip the Glock. Woohoo!!!!!! This may be a step towards my owning it. heehee. He also did not respond when I asked if I could keep it.
Also he is lending me a very small 25 ( I think ) I honestly forget what it is. (Daddy I could use some help. ) :) It will make a perfect pocket gun at least till I can get a good holster to see how I want to carry something bigger.
Can't wait to see what my first rifle will be.
Thanks again forall the ideas. I know what most of them are or at least can quickly look them up, but Jon (my fiancee known as Gus's Guy) has no idea what any thing is. the pics posted helped him. This is a great introductory into him learning more about firearms. Thanks

Well, now that you've been legal for 3 days...how does it feel? LOL
Glad you got some good ideas and hope Jon isn't scared off by all us "Gun Nuts"

I would love to carry the glock, but it's hard to conceal.
In Israel, if you're lucky enough to get a gun license, you usually carry openly.
Glocks are usually carried in the most obvious fashion possible - they're a fashion statement.

which shows how bad a fashion sense the israelis really have. :)
