Well after a long wait I finally was able to order my gun rig for my gold inlayed Walker this evening from BigBadGun. He has spent the last three days designing something I wanted that would both be showy for the Walker but envoke a bit of Texas at the same time. Now before anyone ask no I am not from Texas...... but the Walker says Texas to me so I wanted something fitting and Bob gave me exactly what I wantedwith his one off design work and incorporated something I wanted in it as well ;) Now to watch the clock :D

The first 3 pics are actual transfer of the design from acetate to the leather.
The last pic is of the design once its been transfered. Next step is the carving.

Bigbadgun, that's going to look great! Very, very cool watching NobleSniper's gunleather evolve. This should be on your website too - this is good stuff to watch and read.
Looks like someone from the suburbs of Indianapolis is getting transformed into a Walker toting Texas Ranger, buckle and all. He'll be posting as Gus McRae before long! He just has to ripen that neutral Mid-western accent into something more colorful (normal, maybe?). :D

As I recall from middle school art class, leather dye has a funky odor. In fact I cannot remember anything else that has ever smelled like it since then. Does it still have that unmistakable odor in this day of odorless solvents and dyes and stains?

Wow, too bad. Unless it was really unhealthy, and it likely was. That stuff was really pungent.
Of course back then, we drove to school with shotguns in gun racks so we could give squirrels, dove, the odd pig, and pretty much anything else, "what for" after classes. I had a gear shift cover made from a boar's ball sack for years. Hair and all. It was a hit with the girls back then too. Times have changed, I guess. I can't see any of the women I've dated recently getting all gaga for a custom gear shift cover today. Sissies.
Holster's looking good. You take a pretty good picture too.

And NOBODY thought anything of it. But times they are a changing.

Yeah they are (or did). Too bad for the kids now. Responsible gun ownership and usage used to be a part of growing up. To some extent our changing society is responsible for that loss. Less rural and sub-rural, more urban and suburban. And with that goes the loss of culture.
Still, I do my part to instill the same responsibilities into my kids that were instilled in me. My son is autistic, and extremely sound sensitive, but with a good pair of ears on he can can take any short arm I own and put a hole where he wants, and do it safely. My daughter has really taken an interest in the black powder guns, so much so, that I bought her 2 Remington '58's. Got .45 LC Kirst conversions on order for both of them so she can do the Cowboy Mounted Shooting thing.
Anyway, less glamorization of firearms as an answer to teenage social conflicts and more as a tool to be respected and enjoyed responsibly is in order. It's the parents who are failing our kids now. Lack of involvement is all too common now I think. Shame on us.
And the obligatory on topic comment. :) Get lots and lots of pics of punching the lacing holes, and the actually lacing. I am really enjoying watching you work on this.

No lacing stitching holds up better I am gonna stitch this thing up with black unless you want a different color. (thanks for the kind words on my work.
Both my boys have grown up around guns and both respect them as tools and enjoy shooting. My oldest boy now 19 likes modern stuff more and my younger now 18 like the bp stuff. But both can handle either very well. My younger fell in love with my .50 inline so he might get it for his birthday in March if he is lucky.

Okay, that brings up another question. What's the difference between lacing and stitching?
bigbadgun
July 4, 2009, 03:12 PM
Lacing is more decorative. And after a while it starts to loosen up thats why i dont mess with it.

The bridle I made for Roberta's horse is "stitched" with a saddle stitch. It looks like a machine stitch on both sides of the leather, but will not unravel if a stitch is cut. It is sewn with two needles.
On the reins I made for her have both "stitching" (to hold the hardware on) and is "laced" with a "Mexican Round" type pattern. The "laced" portion is more decorative, gives more "grip" for your hands, and is done with leather lacing. The stitches are done with a waxed saddle stitching thread. The lacing on the reins runs for 4' along each side of the reins... and for each foot of laced rein, it requires 9' of lacing to do it. LOTS of hours worth of tedious work. I made the bridle for her birthday last fall and the reins for her for Christmas this last year. I stamped the same design on each and used the same concho rivets to adorn each.
ok here is the holster about 90% done. Still need to edge it and seal it.
That's some mighty fine work BBG !!! You're a true craftsman with the swivel knife and related leather crafting tools ! Can't wait to see the finished product !!

LOL I did up a clutch purse for a buddy's wife a while back... did a "tri-weave" stamping design in it. I misaligned my pattern right at the front's top flap just as I was getting close to finishing the stamping. LOL So... I learned how to do a snake skin inlay on it and cut out the mistake, grafted in the snake skin and finished it off. Fixing my mistake made for a nicer product than what I was originally shooting for. The piece of snake skin was already dyed red with black patterning... so... since the tri-weave basket design closely resembles reptile scales... I dyed it red and did an antiqued finish on the rest of the leather. It ended up being a good recovery.
