What is this and why was it on my Wingmaster?

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee117/sfbcd49ers1/dscf1853.jpgI'm guessing it's a stock spacer. My question is, should I put it back on? I want as short a length of pull possible in a full stock (I'm having an Express laminate stock modified for Youth dimensions) so what is the purpose of this thing and should it go back on given my stated intention?

It is called a Stock Bearing Plate, and it is in there to evenly distribute the recoil forces all over the end of the stock instead of just on the edges.

I'd put it back in.

Remington didn't put it there just to get rid of scrap parts.

If you have wood stocks put it back in. Some synthetic stocks are made to replace the spacer.

Thanks. I'll throw it back on. Won't add much to the length anyway.

It shouldn't add anything to the length because the stock is recessed where it mates to the surface of the receiver metal. The stock bearing plate is used with wood stocks. I know it isn't used with some synthetics, but I don't know about all of them. I don't do synthetics.
