to you reloaders out there
has any one used a 110 grain (like in the 308 tap rounds) of lighter bullets in the 30-06
if so what kind of velocity was possible?

According to the latest Speer manual you can drive a jacketed 110 gr bullet from 3000 to over 3300 fps depending on the powder type with maximum powder charges. How stable the 110 gr bullet will be at these velocities will be will depend on the individual rifle and it's twist. :)

I experimented with 110 gr bullets in my 30-06.

They shot to a COMPLETELY different point of impact from my rifle.

Not even on paper at 100 yards.

I gave them to a friend whose rifle shot them to roughly the same POI as his heavier loads.

Your mileage may vary.

i shoot them out of my 300 weatherby for reduced recoil practice. i find pretty similar impact and < moa unless i screw up.

im thinking out of a garand

bullet that light might present problems operating the action of an m1, but i really dont know, the lightest thing ive ever loaded for mine was 147g bullets.

i dont think it would hurt to try as long as you use powders with acceptable burn rates.

example imr or h4895 or anything of similar burn rate. really slow powders are where you start asking for problems.

ive been told by a hodgdon rep that as long as you dont use anything slower than varget, you should be ok, although i have heard of others using slightly slower powders without problems, im sure they were using heavier bullets than 110's

I've tried them but had feeding problems due to length of bullet. Seating was too shallow and they kept on bending out of the shell on the feed ramp as they were chambered. Was using a 03A3 and a FN Mauser. Also tried them in a 30-30. Single shot hand inserted OK but as mentioned earlier were way off point of aim. Did best in the 30-30.

Don't know about an auto, but Hornady 110gr Sp worked fine in a 760 rem pump. 1-10 twist . Great for running deer target field days, cuts down on the lead. Did shoot a live deer with it at about 70 yds. went right down. Bullet did not exit the other side. Over 3000 fps. Good for working up light loads for young shooters also.

Haven't shot the .30-06 for awhile, but back when I was playing with an old Rem 721, I settled on 53.7 Gr. of IMR 4064 behind a Speer 110gr. Spire Point.

That's a starting load in my old Speer manual, but should still deliver around 3100 fps. Very pleasant to shoot and very accurate. It was my woodchuck load for awhile...sort of a .223 times two

For an M1A, I have no idea what would work...

Many, many years ago, when I only had 1 rifle (pre-64 M70), a .30-06, I used Sierra 110 HP for varmints, etc. My load was 54.5 gr of IMR 4064. They were smokers! I didn't have a chronograph, but the book said 3300 fps. It would group 3/4" at 100 yds all day! On good days, I could get 5 shots in 1" at 200 yds. I quit using them because I thought that they were so hot (but in manual) that they might not be good for my barrel--and I acquired other shooters. Point being, it was a good load in a 110 bullet in the '06. I gauruntee, when that bullet hit a critter, it was game over!

I use Speer 110gr spire points in my Weatherby Vanguard .308 for critter hunting.

52gr of WW 748 averages just under 3200 fps - no, it's not a 22-250 AI, but i've had good accuracy out to 200 yards - haven't checked beyond that, and it's enough speed for what I do.

It's a fun round to shoot and noticeably louder than, say, shooting my 180 Fail Safes.
