I have a marlin model 60 which has a plastic bolt buffer inside the action. Is Hoppes #9 safe for use with plastic parts? The website doesnt make any mention of it.

Thanks.

Hoppe's n° 9 doesn't affect plastic as far as I know.

While I am not an expert by any means, I have been using Hoppe's #9 for years and it has gotten all over plastic parts like magazine followers and hand grips and such. I personally have never had an issue with it. I am sure that many others will tell you the same story.

The last several bottles that I've obtained of the stuff were plastic.

I think the type of plastic is important.

I've had some plastics get "melty" after having come into contact with Hoppes #9.

yep... depends on the plastic. Most "gun" plastics have no trouble, but be careful.

Somehow I think polymer gun makers just may have anticipated someone using Hoppe's #9.....

If it's safe enough to a) use as an aftershave lotion, and b) to use as a mouthwash, it sure as shootin' won't hurt the polymer parts of your firearms. :)

I'd recommend testing it on a very small, non-critical area of the part. I was using a different product to clean some of my guns, didn't do anything to the plastic/rubber grips. Started using it on my PPK without testing it first, and it softened the hard plastic grips enough that I left fingerprints in it. Didn't do anything to the Hogue grip sleeve.

FWIW I emailed S&W about their M&P frames. They said Breakfree CLP should be fine, they didn't know about the Wilson Ultima Lube and they recommended against using Hoppes #9 bore cleaner on the polymer frame.

I figure it's best not to tempt fate, besides the CLP cleans the frame just fine for me.
