I don't have the Howard Leight muffs but I have been using the Pro Dimension units for some time now.
I will not go back to regular earmuffs again. The ability to hear everything is great.
What is the Noise Reduction Rating on the Leight models? I went with the Pro Dimension due to it having the highest rating at 33 Decibels.

Howard Leight hearing protectors (note: ear muffs are for the cold) work just fine. They typically manufacturer lower-priced items without all the bells and whistles and streamlining that other brands do.

Yeh I know but both Midway and Natchez call them muffs, so I did also.
BTW after researching a whole bunch of feedbacks from various mfg's I ordered the Impact Sport. Very highly recommended for the price. High valvue for amount spent.

I have & use Howard Leight ear protectors exclusively. They work very well. Turned all the way up you can hear a pin drop 25 yards away. I do find myself dialing them up & down while shooting so I can talk & shoot. IMHO, they're adequate up to about 7.62x39, .308 is still slightly painful without ear plugs under the muffs. I like 'em

Do they have true stereo sound or just left/right?

They claim to be directional, will know more in a few days when I get mine. At this point I only know what I've read and a very limited experience of approx 10 min., while wearing ones that belonged to someone else.
I've got a pair of Caldwells that I donot like at all, my ears ring after a day at the range of wearing them. Also have a pair of Remington and Silencio, both do not turn up their volume high enough to suit me.
I would guess the pick up mike placement will have a lot to do with the true stereo sound. My hearing aids have p/u mikes facing forward and also to the rear for the stereo effect.

I bought a pair last year, and they work 'just fine'--at least with handgun rounds.

I just got a pair of the Impact Sport. They work fine. The NRR is a bit low, maybe 22? I'll put plugs under the muffs for long sessions or loud guns. Also, the volume control on mine seems to "jump" from minimal amplification to downright freaky-good amplification. I was in the kitchen when I first put them on and cranked them up. Every sound in the house became available. There's so much ambient noise in the world (neighbor's AC, my fridge, traffic, etc.) that you hear a constant drone of white-noise, punctuated by any normal sounds you would perceive without focusing.

Man isn't that the truth. I haven't heard all this "noise" for years till I just got my new digital hearing aids. They have opened a whole world to me in what I've been missing. Don't even have to have the tv set at 45 anymore.

x2. When I'm shooting my .308 or 22-250 I use plugs underneath, but for ak and pistols they work great all by themselves.
"Muffs" is a lot easier and quicker to say and type than "hearing protectors". Everybody knows what you're talking about, so what's the big deal?

I bought a pair from Cabela's back around x-mas time. They were on sale for $29.00 so I figured at that price even if I hated them I wouldn't be out a lot of money. Well, 6 months later and they work great and never had to double plug yet shooting handguns or the AR-15.

I use a pair of them, usually doubled up with plugs, although outside they do ok by themselves. I've had good luck with mine and I've been using them about 2 years.

Howard Leight Impact Sports are awesome! The conversation amplification can be turned up REALLY loud. You literally have super human hearing. For indoor ranges, I recommend wearing plugs as well. The amplification will help with your conversation over the plugs but block out the blasts. Outdoors, you only need the Impact Sports and it makes shooting with friends very enjoyable. Sometimes you'll miss a word or two when there's a gunshot in the background and the hearing protection circuit blocks all incoming noise, including words.
