Check out this gun on GB. Look at the cylinder pics. Why was Paterson spelled with 2 Ts?

Misspelled by the engraver? Anyone have that Colt book? It should have the information about that. I can't imagine anyone overlooking it.

In the book, The Book of Colt Firearms, by Sutherland & Wilson; page 48 they show a reproduction of the cylinder scene and “Paterson” is spelled “Patterson.” Strangely the barrel marking has it as, “Paterson.”

Maybe in those early days there was some confusion about the spelling of the home of Colt in Paterson, NJ which was named after the deceased first Governor of NJ, one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
And according to Wikipedia, the two different spellings are variations of the same name.

At the time, it was still quite early in the town's history and the revolver was also new, although there would eventually be about 20 variations of the Paterson revolver made.
Paterson was originally formed as a township from portions of Acquackanonk Township on April 11, 1831, while the area was still part of Essex County. Paterson became part of the newly-created Passaic County on February 7, 1837

On February 25, 1836, Samuel Colt obtained patents in the United States, France, and England for the first marketable repeating arms employing a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single, stationary barrel. The first handgun based on this patent was the Colt Paterson, so named because it was produced in Paterson, New Jersey.
Samuel Colt's first factory, the Patent Arms Company of Paterson, New Jersey manufactured 1,450 revolving rifles and carbines, 462 revolving shotguns and 2,350 revolving pistols between 1836 and 1842 when the business failed.

There are more places in North America named Patterson than there are Paterson. And there's also the town of Patterson, NY as well as it being the name of the current NY Governor Patterson.
