Do you want it to work or not?

With revolvers, as with most things, you get what you pay for.

The cheapest good .357 mag would probably be a used Ruger DA or SA.

Cheapest I deem worthy of ownership is Rossi, danged nice revolvers. I suppose you could go with a Charter Arms, but I really prefer the Rossi. I've owned both. My Charter was a .38, though, not .357.

Seems Rossi is cheaper?

Plan on getting in a duel and giving a free gun to your opponent? :D

The cheapest good .357 mag would probably be a used Ruger DA or SAAgreed, except I'll add Dan Wesson in there. I just picked up a like new 4" DW for just over $400 to me..Very nice and great quailty IMHO. A well used one will still be a great gun and even cheaper. Or maybe you'll catch a deal on a Smith.

I think "Commanche" or something revolvers are even cheaper than Rossi, but quality is supposed to be atrocious.

I bought a new Windicator .357 snub a couple years ago for about $200. They're made by a German company. Mine appears to be reasonably well-made, never malfunctioned. Heavy enough (28oz) to make shooting full-powered loads painless. What little I've heard about them is good. You might still find them new in the low $200 range if you look around online.

Yes, the German revolvers marketed by EAA (European American Armory) as the Windicator. The German manufacturor name starts with a "W". I can't pronounce it anyway.
They are no frills but pretty stout made from all accounts. I wouldn't be afraid of one.
Look at em on gunbroker.

A fiend of mine has one. He bought it years ago. When he told me how much he paid for it, I figured the thing would fall apart before 50rds.

After I handled and fired it, I thought it was a pretty decent gun, particularly, since he paid less than $200 for it. Of course, this was more than fifteen years ago. I don't know what the newer ones are like.

I had a friend who purchased a Windicator. It broke the second time out to the range. That was about 8-9 years ago. Maybe it was a fluke, maybe they've improved. Taurus is a crap shoot. I'd go with a Ruger. Used Ruger revolvers can be very reasonable. Cheaper than a new Taurus.

I recently (like 2 months ago) paid $380 (+ shipping and FFL fee) for a NIB 50th Anniversary .357 Blackhawk. My biggest problem is actually finding any .357 Magnums or 38 Specials!

This is standing at 15 yards with 38 Special 158gr LRN rounds. Overall I would have to say that I am pretty pleased with the results.

Taurus. My experience with a Taurus 605 snub has been great.

One wonders if worrying about a $100 bucks when buying a gun is worth it. Pay for a reasonably good one and you never need parts or ever actually have to buy another one for the rest of your life. Buy cheap and then pay a extra $150 bucks down the road to fix it dosn't really make sense and that is if you can even buy parts for it.

Are SA revolvers not cheaper than DA?

Not really. Even used, you pay for a Blackhawk about what you'd pay for a used SP101 or GP100 which ain't that cheap. I like 'em, though, some of the strongest revolvers on the market for an affordable price. They're even used by guys like John Linebaugh to build 5 shot cannons. I have a 6.5" .357 blued and a 4 5/8" stainless .45 that I liked so much I had engraved and bought a set of sanbar stag grips for it. That thing is a tack driver, amazingly accurate.

I've gotten good deals on used Taurus M66s. I have a 4" nickled one that was like new, one little holster wear blimish that was even half way noticable. Super trigger on that thing, as good as my Smith and Wesson M10. It's also slightly more accurate than that M10 and its design is a bit of an improved K frame, better frame strength and ROUND forcing cone, no flat on it to stress crack. I gave 197 plus tax at a gun show for it. I have an older 3" M66 blued, lots of holster wear, but still tight, perfect timing, accurate, I gave $180 for it not long ago. It's a pretty decent IWB carry, though the grip is a little bulkier than my SP101's. I just couldn't refuse it for 180 bucks, though, good shooter. Thing is, you're going to buy used, even new revolvers, I check 'em out real close. You can normally find the flaws on inspection if you know what to look for. There's a sticky at the top of this page concerning that.

Hey, if you're talking ANY DESIGN OR STYLE of revolver, you can get a Pietta 1858 Remington cap and ball for well under 300 bucks. I've seen 'em on sale for 199. You can, for a couple hundred, get a .45 Colt conversion cylinder for one. You can mail order BOTH, no paperwork. That's important to folks that don't trust big brother. When I can get a firearm sans paperwork, I'm always happy. I don't have that '58 Remmy, but I have thought I'd like to get one. I think I'd get one with a 5.5 inch barrel and maybe in stainless and spend a few more bucks on it. I have a .31 Remington from CVA and a Ruger Old Army. The .31 I got from Gander Mountain back when they had a mail order catalog for 60 bucks! It's a very tight, well made gun, too, but ain't real accurate. Fun, though. It's made by Armi San Marco in Italy. I found my ROA quite by happenstance at a gun shop who was trying to sell out of black powder, had a $97.50 price tag on it. I asked the proprietor if that was a misprint, said "No, just wanna get rid of it." I tore the pocket on my jeans getting my wallet out in a hurry. LOL! I had a stainless one I'd traded for, but it got stolen in a burglary of my home, so I was REAL happy to replace it with another ROA in great shape, all-be-it a blued one.

I've thought about a cap and ball pistol.
It would be much fun.

Thank you for the advice, but I'm more interested in buying a firearm that I wouldn't mind beating up a little, and getting a little gunsmithing practice on.

Commanche arms make one of the worst 357 revolvers ever.

And cheapest.

Go get a used Ruger or Smith. I paid 220.00 a few years back for a 4" GP100. Great quality, cheap. Done.

Several months ago, I bought a new Rossi .357, four inch revolver at Academy for $299. I am well pleased, shoots straight with .357 and .38. Mild recoil, would buy again.

I would try and find a nice used Smith & Wesson model 66.
There are a lot of police trade in's that have just holster wear.
I have seen them go for $375 for s nice one.
You really cant go wrong with a nice used Smith & Wesson, and the model 66 is a very nice revolver.......
