Nice looking trapdoor, original or repro?

That's the real one [1884],I also have a 1970's H&R Cavalry Carbine. The '84 started out life as a sportered full length rifle, but a friend [now passed on] fitted a premium barrel on it and made it into a fair copy of the ''Officer's'' model.

Anytime BHP Fan. Your ownership of a Trapdoor got me interested more than I have been in shootable antiques. Found a fine old 1873 Springfield Trapdoor at my favorite shop in really great condition at the right price. If it's there after vacation, I have a feeling it'll be coming home.

Have you ever noticed, some pistols and rifles just scream out at you? This one sure did!

Now... when you're typing your post.... Just above the box in which your text appears you'll see (on the lower right half) a yellow box that has a pair of mountain peaks and a dot above 'em... and when you point to it it'll let you know it's "Insert Image". If you click onto that, and then copy/paste the "URL" of your picture at photobucket into the dialog box it brings up and then "Ok" after doing so... it'll post the pic, instead of just the address link.

Another way of doing it is... to type: and insert the URL after the first and then put the after it. An example of your URL for your pic would look like this: http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv134/Ratdog68/BlackPowder/1858/NewArmy/1858001.jpg

So... with the URL put together... it'll just post up the pic you want to share... like this:

http://i677.photobucket.com/albums/vv134/Ratdog68/BlackPowder/1858/NewArmy/1858001.jpg

Now, go forth and practice... hint... if you select "preview post" instead of "submit reply"... you can edit things until it is the way you want it, and THEN hit "submit reply".

Red X'd? OMG, I'm pretty sure that's the same thing that happened to my Uncle . . . right before he died.

you're almost there !!! :neener: Did you read my hint beneath the picture I posted? Keep after it... go back and look at the colors and how they're put together on the step by step I posted for you. The "blue", plus the "red" WILL equal a pic. Just make certain your "URL" is copied exactly as it is in photobucket. See? I can take the "URL" from your post and make it appear by doing the addition of the "" thing.

It's far easier to just go to the photo in your Photobucket album, copy the IMG line below the photo, then paste it in your post.

Hey on the wall rack I saw an underhammer that has a long brass scope! ;)

Before you place the direct image address in the image box, just delete the Http:// that's already in the box or else you will have 2 Http:// in the address box which will result in a red X.

Also, before you click on the yellow image icon which makes the image box appear, make sure that your cursor is in the location in the reply box where you want your picture to appear.

Your cat on the bed looks like mine. How big is he? My cat weighs in at a little over 20 lbs. A little hard to pick him up when he doesn't want to be picked up.

When I do a "properties" of your "Red X".... I see:

http://[IMG]http:// at the beginning of your pic's URL. Lose the first http:// and you may be in the ballpark.

Instead, it should start as: [IMG]http:// and have the URL follow. You're close.

Cool. What's your opinion of the Middlesex Village Howdah? Build quality, how well it shoots, etc.

Thanks! I hope to get a couple more belt pouches, a nice looking traditional sheath knife, a couple more cylinders, and a conversion cylinder in the next few weeks..

Pete Plunkett at Middlesex corresponded with me a few times before I ordered the howdah pistol, sending pics of some of his antique howdah guns and British tiger guns from India and pics of the double barrel's prototype. I was on a waiting list for some time, their suppliers make everything by hand so they deliver in spurts.

I've gotten a lot of compliments on the howdah (they have it listed as a Double Barrel Caplock at Middlesex http://www.middlesexvillagetrading.com/PDBC.SHTML). It's not gawdy looking like some blackpowder guns I've seen, it's got just enough engraving. The engraving/stamping between the barrels is really light, not as deep or textured as the prototype but everything else is okay, you can tell it's handmade, it's not cookie cutter machined looking. The trigger pull is crazy heavy, but I've never shot another traditional muzzleloader, so I don't have a point of reference.

The nipples are for British Musket caps, not American caps, so I have to egg them a little, just like I egg my #11 caps to fit the Remington. The Indian dudes oversize the head of the nipple, so you have to dress them with a file a little bit so a standard quarter inch wrench can fit, if you are compelled to remove or replace them. I have no idea what the thread pitch of the ramrod is, so I made a ramrod with an oak dowel, a wooden craft ball, and a 20 gauge shotgun tip to tamp down the loads properly.

I haven't gotten around to putting it on a bench yet to group it, but it seems that it shoots high. I have to find the right powder charge for it. I've gotten up to 40 grains of FFg with the .60 balls, 80 grains of #7 pellets, 12 # 1 Buckshot pellets, it just kicks a little so far.

I had to send the pistol back because the rear trigger wasn't heat treated properly at the manufacturer so it bent, but they had it back to me in two days, better than new. For $350 it's nice, it's not as pretty as a Pedersoli "replica" but saving $300 is pretty nice..I suspect that the guys in India that make them are probably the same company (of several) that made the originals more than 100 years ago, so technically, it's not a replica. It's just a newer model, like the 100th anniversary Browning Auto-5.

I hope to get one of their replica 1853 Springfield Muskets soon (http://www.middlesexvillagetrading.com/MENF.shtml), I'm a satisfied customer of Middlesex. :)

Nice review of their Howdah, wittzo. Thanks you for taking the time to post this.

Anyone know if anything can be done to lighten the trigger pull on a double sidelock (or a single for that matter)?
