Legal issue, NY, NYC, long guns

Hey everyone. I was hoping someone out there with a knowledge of long gun laws in New York state and NYC can answer the following question:

I am a NYC resident, and a NYC Rifle and Shotgun Permit holder.
If I rent a self storage facility in another part of New York state (close to an outdoor range where the guns can be fired--my wife doesnt want the guns in the house with our young children around), can I purchase and possess rifles without registering them in NYC (since they are not in NYC). If yes, I am then assuming that I can also buy more than one rifle within a 90 day period (NYC rule). To my knowledge, the NY state law is that long guns can be purchased without permit and there is no limitation on number of long guns purchased, as there is in the city. So the root of the question is: does the law apply to the gun owners place of residence, or place of possession? Thanks in advance.

Not sure.

I did hear that the NYPD has a task force that routinely checks (non-NYC) NY FFL dealers' records to see if NYC residents are buying firearms and not registering/getting permits for them with the NYPD.

The NYPD task force makes visits/raids to people's homes if they find a purchase and no corresponding NYC permit/license.

Now all that could be FUD, but you never know with Mayor Bloomberg in charge.

As a former NYC handgun and long gun owner/permit holder, I recall a few specific things that will apply to you. My memory is rusty as I moved a few years ago, but I don't think there have been any substantive changes since then. Another thing to keep in mind is to never let a non-gun owner or non-civilian help you interpret NYC gun laws. The police will rarely give you a correct answer, so check things with other gun owners, range members, etc. See if you can find a NY firearms owners' site like Calguns, PAFOA, etc. where you can get more expert advice. But what I recall is:

1) NYC has no jurisdiction over guns you have elsewhere, for obvious reasons. However, you will need to comply with local laws wherever "there" is. Try to make "there" NY outside NYC or CT, and not NJ. Better yet, make it VT. What a great place to own guns. You will want to read the rental contract of any place you lease so as not to violate that, as well as the municipal laws wherever it is.

2) Remember that your NYC issued/endorsed license is basically a restrictive premises license - I believe it stipulates how you can store your guns that are purchased via that license and where, unless you notify them how you disposed of them.

I went through this kinda thing for a number of years. I left some guns with family in another state and never brought them to NYC, and others I periodically stored in a nearby state where I had rental property. Options that would be simplest for you:

a) see if the range you are talking about stores guns. Many in that area do, since they know the crazy laws NJ/NYC owners have to face so they try to accommodate that.

b) show your wife how "locks" work. She may be impressed with this technology. Put them on the trigger or action mechanism. Then there's no risk, and no added cost/hassle and the greater security risk of storing them in an unoccupied place far from your home.

Good Luck...

I know of at least 1 or 2 people that do this. I believe you would be fine leaving your firearms at a secured area outside of the city.

Maybe I am missing something here, but wouldn't just buying a safe to secure your guns at home be a better option? Or is it mandatory to have the guns stored off-site?

I am asking since I am also in one of those "other" restrictive states but was curious about the reasons for not storing at home in a safe?

There are no restrictions on a NYC resident buying and storing long guns (with the exception of guns restricted in NYS) outside the city.

Once outside the city, you have the same rights as any other NYS resident.
