Do not really want to wait weeks or overpay for the 5th Edition book. I am hoping that there might be some load data for Red Dot in the book for the 12ga sabot slug.

Are you talking of the Lyman 525 gr. sabot style cast slug?
I just checked my 4th edition and it does not list Red Dot.
Specifically, which slug are you wanting to load?, and in which hull?

Riss,

Red Dot is too fast of a powder for slugs. You will get too much pressure and never reach a suitable velocity.

I use AA hulls mostly. Or the black Remingtons. The slug is the Lyman 575 gr ?, sabot that fits in the regular wad. As for powder I only have red dot, Reloader 15 and VV N350 on hand. It fills most of my needs so far. I know I can get some Herco which was on the list. Whatever I use I will try to make sure I can use it for something else also. As far as speed goes for any slug load, this will be loaded for match ammo only, not taking any animals with it. So as long as I can hit a steel plate at 40 yards I am good to go.

I use the 1 oz slugs from Lee and here is my recipe:

WIN AA Hulls
WIN primers
WIN WAA12 wads - white
Herco 35.0 gr
Lee 1oz slugs.

I have had great success with this. Makes a paper plate sized steel plate go ding from 100 yards away every time if I do my part. This is through a smooth bore too.

My load:

Remington unibody hulls
WIN primers
WIN WAA12SL wads
AA #5 38.5 gr
Lee 1oz slugs.

I settled on Unique for the 525 gr Lyman slug. It fits rather nice in the AA12 wad. Needing some load data for Unique and I will be ready to go. If anyone had data I could use it.

i use unique with the 525 cast but mine drops out of the mold at 506 grains cast of straight wheel weights. I started playing and foun that a starting load of 22.9 grains unique with a winchester wad in a black remington hull and CCI 209 primers worked very well in my Mossberg 18 1/2" smooth slug barrel. Several whitetail does have been felled with it.

Well I found 2 loads on the .net last night before I left to go load. I managed to get 20.9 gr of Unique out of the bushing that was in my press so I just loaded with that. Used Rem STS shells. The loads were quite nice. Not much more recoil, maybe less, than a standard 2 3/4 load.
